LMAO!!! I like that sail!!
my experience with orks is limited. I have seen mixed and non mixed squadrons of escorts.
1) Brute ramships... ram. Surprise surprise So it is better to use them alone in pure ram ship squadrons in their suicide run
2) the other escorts can work well both ways, I guess, but in general the torpedo ones I have seen them played alone in order to get them reloading ordenance when they can, while the others avoid special orders or lock on the enemy (or swarm him and board him, even if it is tricky).
Both terror and kill cruisers are good, but not great. They need to act at least in pairs to be effective. A kill kroozer needs to go really near the enemy to be effective (15 cm) while a terror ship supplies ordenance. I prefer both of them with torpedoes than prow heavy guns, but that is me. They have inflicted me more damage with the torps.
In any case squadron them. They work better in pairs, as usual. The lack of shields and a weak rear armour coupled with lousy fightabomberz means that ork aircraft is better used for defence, or to launch assault boats. Play the relief thingy with your squadroned ships and close the distance FAST. That big red button is there for something
3) The warlods work best in one per squadron or battleship. A pair of ork kroozers with a warlord assaulting together have a boarding potential of 30. That is amazing. The extra power fields and boarding parties IMO are the best upgrades you can give the ships.
4) All the special battleships are OK IMO, except for the slamblasta. 2 prow lances such to get long range firepower in your fleet, specially since you want to close in very fast.
The general design of the fleets I have faced (1500 pts) were:
0-1 battleship 2 terror ships 2-4 kill ships 1-2 groups of 4 brutes Assorted escorts & 3 warlord (one in each cruiser squadron, one in the big bad ship).
All of them were played by the dame guy, so you get there why the variety is niot that great. he prefers cruisers over escorts, but I have read on the BFG-yahoo list that ork escorts can be a blast, so maybe dropping some cruisers for a shitload of escorts might be worth it.
Hope that helps. Orks are a tricky fleet to play. You must play the ork way or you will lose. You cannot engage in a long range firefight and come up on top. Close, blast holes in the enemy (torpedoes, assault boats and a barrage of WBs) and then assault him. At least this is what I gathered playing them only a small number of times!
Regards,
Xavi
