No I asked if they should lose their games. There's a difference. I asked because they are losing their games, if not all of the time, then most of the time. It is happening right now. See the difference?

So if SMs shouldn't win half their games most of the times, does this mean they should lose their games all the time?

You are absolutely correct, you did ask a question, however it was a very leading question that only one possible outcome- if they shouldn't win half their games they MUST lose ALL their games.

Its like saying "So either I am right or you are an idiot" (not you :D ) but couched as a question.

I am not trying to be anal about it, but when you arguing with someone, giving them only one option even as a question implies there IS only one option.

As for the shields and turrets- by all means add more, they should have more.

As far as i can ascertain from the fluff, space marine fleet 'patrols' as it were are made up of the rapid strike vessels they employ- not something you could necessarily protect shipping lanes with.

And as the most battle barges a chapter has is ~3-4 with 10 strike cruisers, I just don't see them having the resources let alone the werewithall to actually perform rountine patrols- at only 1000 battle brothers a marine chapter needs all its men for battle, not babysitting merchant lanes.

I have an excellent record in 'marine missions' winning over 2/3's of my battles against Imperials and Chaos. Do I wreck their fleet? Nope, not often, but I win the game often with no dead cap ships (they disengage when near death).

At least there's one person that plays SMs and does quite well with them :D  There was someone at Port Maw before the last crash that said they won most of their games including small fleet engagements too IIRC.

I'm all for more shields and turrets so they can survive a bit longer (which makes a lot of sense).  The first point of the original post was to point out that not every fleet should be perfect.

Dark Eldar (in 40K) were one of my two armies and I loved playing with them because they were a challenge, but a lot of people think they're the worst (or one of the worst) armies.  I lost all of my games initially then slowly won more often as I learnt to use the army better.  When I stopped playing I was winning about 60-70% of my games.

The second reason for the original post was that SM fleet lists were popping out of the woodwork, and the link was intended to be food for thought.  IMO there should be no SM list that is more favourable than the basic list - every bonus should have a downside.  No one fleet list should be far better than any other (including the basic list).

I should add here that all our games were very cap ship death light. People would cheerfully disengage the little darlings rather than have they suicide on 1 hit point. Not to say casulaties didn't happen. Frequently they would herald the turning point of the battle and a mass disengage by the mauled fleet.

Since returning to BFG, my friends and I do the same in most games.  If anyone manages to destroy a capital ship they've likely won unless the other player gets lucky and destroys one as well.  We find it a lot more fun than when we left our ships trying to fight with so little firepower.  Is this normal, or do most people let their ships fight until they die in one-off games?

Unfortuently few people seem to fight as if they are commanding a navy with limited cap ship resupply, making 'to the death' quite common.

Indeed I've won fleet engagements with Imerpials against such people when I'm the one disengaging, they just thrown the ships away and the VP system punishes that.

In one off games, thus not in a campaign, disengaging is something of the last things I would do. I know this costed me a victory.
Sometimes I do it in the last turn if it was a really tight and cool battle wich I want to win but in most cases even those 1 hit cruisers can pull of wonderfull things. :D
