Sorry, I didn't do this with making a good battle report in mind. But we played a good game with 4" hexes this weekend, and it was fun.

Edit:
That thread died. This one was my half-hearted replacement, without descriptions, sorry.

You'e had this idea on the back burner for awhile none, right? Has it achieved paragon status for you yet?

I had to look up "paragon".

I had an old version where I changed more, and I eventually scrapped that. But this is closer to Epic 40K, and I do like it. My impression has been that Epic A games were smaller in terms of numbers of miniatures, and I hope this will let me go bigger but not too much longer.

I raised another issue or two on the TMP thread. For example, the smallest range here is 2 hexes, but firefight range is 1 hex. I think the E40K rule was intended to make some figures only really fight in assault phase, but I was happy to change it because I think ranges ought to look a little longer. However, it might explain the power of that big group of jetbikes in last night's game. I could have countered it with some firepower, but was elsewhere, and she used it as it should have been, picking on lone things on the fringes. So jury is still out there. I use the whole ping-pong table, which means 2 hexes isn't very much.

I still have to add flyers back in. I want to get a bit from Epic A there, because E40K flyers were pretty boring.

Hi Andy i'm a big fan of hexes and have used terrain maker and kallistra hexes before i'd be most interested in reading your mods if you have them layed out in a document please.

Good stuff.

Wanting longer ranges might come from EA's logarithmic scale, or rather wanting a linear scale instead. Dirtside II was linear, as was Striker II. The problems we ran into playing those games in my youth was it often meant weapons could shoot the length of the battlefield (at least, or even move the length of the battlefield in the case of grav tanks in Striker...). DSII got around this by establishing a horizon line. Striker II just left it happen (at least in the basic rules).

I've eventually settled on the opinion that I'm fine with logarithmic scales if it keeps the game playable on the table top. I can live with the table-top terrain getting larger with respect to the models as they get closer to it. It also offers more granularity at the closer ranges, which is (arguably) where the more interesting stuff happens.

Dave, the ranges are definitely still small. I just didn't mind making them a little longer compared to moves. They are 33% longer this way, I guess (20/15).

moredakka, I'd like to add a diagram for fire arcs and clean up a bit, but I'll put this out somewhere and mention it here.
