Okay random questions.
Does anyone know the size of bases for the square infantry stands in epic when it came out?
Also the size of infantry bases when they changed to armageddon and came in strips?
which is a better basing system for playing epic?
What other base sizes were standardised for models for epic? e.g..titan/paladins?

The original bases were 20x20mm
The E:40k bases were 40x12mm

The best basing system is obviously this one: http://www.troublemakergames.co.uk/did-bases.htm

Titans typically came with a 60mm (Warlord, Reaver) or 40mm base (Warhound). Knights came with 25mm bases.

Regarding your question about which is better for playing Epic, which sort of Epic do you mean? Do you mean SM2, Epic40K, NetEpic, or Epic Armageddon?

strips can be strung out to cover more ground (when claiming/contesting objectives or laying out scout screens) they can also go 'end on' when in assaults to get maximum models into base contact and hide from support fire (when engaging warhound packs or pairs of revenants)

Just go with what looks right to you.

Imo, strips look best with 5-man (or more) units of relatively well-organized troopers that don't concern themselves too much with the terrain - in other words, space marines, perhaps sisters - and particularly diabolical IG armies, marching into the fire like they're on the Red Square, November 7th, 1984.

Square or round or polygon bases lend themselves more to fewer miniatures per base, and some sort of interaction; instead of standig at attention, the troopers should be taking cover behind whatever flimsy thing they can find, going over the Plan One More Time, screaming for a medic, coverd in Shootemdeadskij's intestines; you name it (o:

Aesthetically, strip bases without any kind of doubt. But like everything, that's up to oneself.

If you are making a new rule-set, the joy of E:A is that the base sizes are not rigidly defined which means that all the above bases are 'legal' and permits people to adopt different basing for different types of unit ranging from dispersed scouts to lines of infantry or clumps of bugs. The only suggestion I have is that all units be based, both infantry and vehicles, as this makes the interaction between units a lot easier.

You might want to check out the Exodus Wars rules then. They are basically a clean-room port to EA with some lessons learned applied to extend it in interesting ways. Some benefits are
-D10 granularity vs D6
-Separation of MW/TK strength (to use EA terms) against INF and AV targets
-A bunch of very useful new specials for units such as Totem, Tactical Genius, etc
-Not being GW ;)

just throwing it out there. Feel free to ping me if you're interesting in talking some more.

So totally +1 this. It basically removes the whole modeling for advantage deal and fits in better with the level of abstraction that wargames at this size have. Closest base edge to closest base edge when ranging/moving/etc is pretty hard to argue when it is consistently applied.

I really detest seeing that in a game as it smacks of uber cheesy gameyness. Seeing loads of strips all end on around a titan etc looks plain daft. It should be banned forthwith and anyone caught attempting it should be publicly flogged.

;D

You make a good point Yorkie, but in a way the strip bases are suddenly a disadvantage, and people would probably not want to use them in favour of the square bases.

Haha, I was just kidding, public flogging is maybe a bit extreme, maybe just put in the stocks....

I dont think it matters what base sizes are used to be honest, so long as players are in agreement about whats what, then all is fine. Personally I dont like the strip bases. I dont like the squares much either, lately ive been basing all my stuff on small tablet (FOW type) bases.

I use both, having started Epic in '90 ... ^-^ I also use 2, 3 & 4 hole bases from various sources ... based on unit type, etc. ...

Hmm, now I'm really stumped as to what I'm going to do. I will be custom making my bases, and can make then any shape. Every week I get tempted by a different type.

Sometimes having fewer options helps...

Perhaps you need some self imposed restraints?
