Post subject:  Rules Question: Firing at enemy Detachments

If I have one weak unit within firing range of 10 super strong units of an enemy detachment.
And my friendly HQ is 29cm away, and my 10 super strong units are another 29cm away from my HQ but in firing range of one weak unit from the same enemy detachment.

Then I have all my units in firing range of the target enemy detachment. So I can add all my firepower. And when allocating hits, I can allocate them to all enemy units, because I have units in firing range.

So if I'm interpreting the rules correct, this loophole makes my super units shoot at the enemy's super units, even when they're way out of reach...

Don't quite understand what you're asking here but all fireing units must be in range of at least one enemy unit in the target detachment in order to shoot. And only enemy units that are in range of the fireing units can be hit.

Units cannot increase the range of other units in their detachment. You must individually measure the range of all units to check that they are within range and line of fire.

If your out of range you can't hit anything.

Hi, thanks for your reply. If all my heavy firepower units are only in range of the enemy's weak units. And one of my weak units is the only one in range of ALL his heavy units, then strictly speaking I can can use the firepower of my heavy units. Because all my units in the detachment are in range. This way I can use firepower of heavy units against enemy units who are not in range.

It's hard to explain without a drawing... I know...

I have re-read the shooting section in the epic 40k rulebook and i see what you are refering to and the way it is worded it seems you are right but we never interpreted it that way ourselves. I'll take a look at the epic mag's and see if this ever came up and if there is an official stance on how the rule should be interpreted.

We would have played out your above situation as yes all units can shoot but they could still only hit targets within their individual weapons range.

There is/was an official amendment to the shooting and casualty alocation section of the rules i will take a look at that too.

I am not a "bearded" player and will not use this kind of rules trickery, but because I tend to glue, paint and read more than I play, I found this unpleasant loophole.

It seems your interpretation of the shooting rules are correct as i can find nothing in any other epic publication that contradicts it.
As long as a unit is in range of any unit in the target detachment it's firepower attack may be used.

As stated there is an official amendment to hit allocation (section 7 in the shooting phase) and also Anti-tank targetting too.
