Post subject:  Looking for references for rare old Epic figures

Hi all,

I've just joined this group as I'm looking to expand my Epic collection, and hopefully get a bit of gaming in at some point. Anyway, my first question is this: can someone point me in the direction of which issues of old Citadel journals, Epic mags etc I can find adverts and/or references for some of the rarest old Epic figures?

I'm talking stuff like the psi titan, MkII Warlord metal weapons etc. Plus the unreleased stuff. Generally this lot:

cheers
Steve

Here's the WD page advert for exodites and x-craft http://www.pbase.com/brimstone/image/62 ... iginal.jpg

magazine page for drop ship (from same page you linked, but under additional images): http://www.collecting-citadel-miniature ... Ship_A.jpg

Thanks - were the ork bommerz on that page also a limited release?

No, pretty sure sure those are just regular (i don't know much about the ork range though), should be plenty of those about.

X-craft and exodites are rare (never had full release, mail order only for limited time), but do pop up on ebay now and then. Much cheaper than psi-titans or drop ships!

Out of interest do any of the big epic collectors own any of the unreleased stuff such as the vehicles with the unreleased turrets or stowage? I appreciate they are mega rare but are they "just" mega rare or are they "unheard of" mega rare? :)

...or to put it another way, what's the top 10 (for example) rare epic items?

Those tanks with stowage on the linked page should be from Legion 4's collection, he's one of the main posters on these boards. I'm not sure how often those come up for sale, rare but not as 'desirable' as a psi-titan so less expensive.

There's rare vs. expensive … which don't always match up exactly! for the big 'desirable' and expensive stuff you're looking at something like:

Psi-titan
Drop ship
Warmonger (this was release properly via mail order with fanatic adds etc, but is still rare and expensive due to the size/number of parts, and, presumably, low sales at the time)
Mk0 warlords
exodites
Mk2 warlord weapons
x-craft

All depends: a mk0 warlord is probably far rarer than a warmonger, but in most cases i expect warmongers have sold for more consistently over the last 5 years. You're looking into triple figures (£) for psi-titans and drop ships, warmongers a bit less, exodites and x-craft are far cheaper in comparison as individual minis (but still expensive) but then there are several types to get.

the black templars minis from that page you probably just won't ever find. There were blood angel variants of the tanks made, they occur now and then.

Thanks thats very helpful. Are there pictures online of the blood angel variants of the tanks?

Almost certainly, but i don't have them! I'm pretty sure they appeared in some magazine shots painted. They are nothing that special, just predators etc with some small BA iconography on. Same was planned for BT and Ultras (i think, maybe more?) but i'm not sure if they were ever cast.

Hellbores and Capitol Imperialis are expensive as well, regular release minis from Spare Marine era, but big and using a 3rd party plastic track base from a modern tank kit.

'Orky' eldar titans from that page are fairly easy to find, not even sure why they are on there. They were only around during E40k but were a regular release afaik (with proper box packaging etc unlike a lot of the minis under discussion here). They are not very popular with modellers due to the appearance.

Thanks, you've certainly given me plenty of food for thought.

There's also forge world to consider!
The FW Cathedral and tank factory are both very rare and expensive, and the rest of the FW epic terrain (pre AI) is also pricey.
Many of the general release FW minis are now very expensive to obtain since the end in production.
