Post subject:  Does Anyone Play Tyranids?

Hi, I'm a new forum member so my apologies in advance for some pretty noob questions.

I played Epic 40k way back in my early college days with the campus wargamming club - mostly using a friend's mixed Space Marine army. It was one of the most entertaining wargaming periods of my life! After graduating and starting work I lost touch with Epic scale for a bit. I purchased a complete Epic scale Tyranid army in 2003 hoping to get into the game again, but I couldn't find much interest in my area so the Tyranid army has been sitting in my closet for a decade, I never played a single game with them.

I recently discovered it again, and the great memories of some world shattering gaming campaigns are all coming back. Not sure if it is worth keeping around or not. Just thought I would ask the advice of the community if it is worth hanging on to and trying to find someone (anyone) in my community to try and start playing once again.

Would love to know if Tyranids are fun to play with and/or if is there much demand out there for a Tyranid army? I have read that GW no longer supports Epic Armageddon. I am a diehard gamer at heart and if I can't find anyone locally to help me use the figs, I would much rather send them off into the hands of someone who would actually appreciate and use these vintage figs.

Really appreciate the assistance!
Best regards,
Ozzy

Don't know about if playing with tyranids is fun or not :). Depends how much you like the tyranids all together I suppose. But I do hope you find some gamers around you to get some games going! And in the case you should let go of y our tyranids, please contact me.

all the best

Mika

While GW no longer supports epic armageddon, the members of this site certainly do!

There are a few tyranid players here on the UK tournament scene and I'm sure there are plenty more around the world

Try going to your local club, play a few games of 40k or whatever, then ask if people want to try epic and see what they thinj

Well I guess the big question is: where do you live (roughly)?

Epic Armageddon is easily the most played ruleset, at least from the representation on the various forums. So if you don't have a gaming group already playing Epic, that's the version most likely to get you a game.

Where in the world are you? There's a healthy and growing Epic Armageddon scene in the UK (there are 13 EpicA tournaments around the UK this year - see http://epic-uk.co.uk/wp/event-calendar/).

EpicA is my favourite wargame by far and I definitely recommend trying to get some games in. I've played a few games against Tyranids and enjoyed them (they're deadly in some ways but limited in others). A good option can be for you to get a second army as well as the Tyranids e.g. Imperial Guard could be a good choice and then you can strange intro games with people for them to try it

My apologies everyone. I live in Vancouver, Canada. I will update my profile to reflect this. I've read that there are a lot of Epic Armageddon rules which have evolved mainly thanks to the avid members of this website. Hence I have not yet tried looking for a copy of the EpicA ruleset on ebay just yet to begin reading about the core engine rules.

As I mentioned in the OP, I'm a total noob and I am looking for the advice and opinions of any other Tyranid players who may provide some insight to someone familiar only with the original Space Marine ruleset on gameplay for the Tyranid army list. From my recollection, the Tyranid Army List was not even available during the Space Marine era - it came out for Epic 40k?? Chaos Marines and Orks were the army lists of choice back when I played this scale.

Thanks!
Ozzy

There were rules for them in SM/TL via Hive War, and they were included in the E40k armies book. Neither of those see much support nowadays, although NetEpic is based on SM/TL.

For Epic Armageddon, all the rule updates are in the Tournament Pack:

http://www.net-armageddon.org/page/rules

For 'nid lists, v10.1 is the latest NetEA list:

It's still in development, so playtests would be very welcome. However, I'd recommend SM, IG or Orks first if you are learning EA.

I missed where he said he played E40k 3rd edition back in college, now I see how it ties in.

I picked up Tyranids to get into Epic40k. They are a very diverse army that has many different ways of playing them.

If you can find the models I suggest you look at the current list and see what points you can find. It took me a LONG time to find all my current pieces and it took getting them from multiple people. I suggest Bartertown as a start. Keep posting in their forum until someone sees it and contacts you. Otherwise I suggest just trying to find a good buy on Ebay. It can be rough since people try to markup the prices a lot and some are from UK. Just be patient.

GLHF!

DRM make a range of models called Skyth, they make passable nid proxies, I've seen a mostly DRM tyranid army at a UK tournament and it looked the part

Thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts. If Epic 40k isn't really played anymore, I won't bother reading through the ruleset and try to source some EpicA rules instead and read them through.

Dave, thank you for the helpful links! All the local Games Workshop stores in Vancouver closed down some time ago, so finding gamers with older GW armies is no longer an easy task.
