New to the boards here and the game. Appreciate that people who have been playing from the start have keep it going.
Started reading alot of Black Library 40k fiction a couple of years back which brought back memories of seeing Epic titans years ago in a gaming shop, well one thing led to another and through the accessability of the internet I now have enough epic minis to keep me busy in my upcoming retirement.
After buying and reading copies of the various rule sets I find that I quite prefer the 3rd edition. I like that it's a complete rule set that isn't changing, it matches the 40k story line, and is streamlined (more strategy and less dice rolling from my way of seeing it).
To me it's a quick paced game that's easy to learn and allows one to be tactically engaged. (Also, simple enough to allow me to play casual games with my wife and adult son. It even has provided enjoyable solitaire games)
From lurking about the internet I see there is a local group (Chicago) playing alot at the local battle bunker so I'm trying to keep my armies flexable with the new rules just in case I ever get the gumption to play in a tournament.
Just thought I'd post here, and let anyone who might want to discuss 3rd edition to know someone is actively playing and thinking about it.
So far I have painted up a good sized detachment of IG 'Cadian' infantry and am working on detachments of orks, basing each detachment on the pricipal ork tribal divisions/ ethnic weapon/fighting style preference.

Are you in the city? There's a fairly large following (a dozen or so) at the Battle Bunker in Downers Grove. Thursday evenings is the best time to find an opponent (it's the 'agreed on' night), but give a call out on Adeptus Windy City and someone can usually show.

I live on the Northside (grew up on the Westside) Probably will have more time once I retire in the fall. Wanted to go to Adeptacon this year, but family events came up at the same time. Thanks for the tip on the local site, good to see there's local interest in the strategic GW games.
To be frank, I don't see much difference between any of the rule sets, so eventually, if I wanted to play at the Battle Bunker I wouldn't mind E:A at all, I just happen to prefer the streamlined 3rd edition at the moment.

Welcome. I think you will find the Epic: Armageddon rules to be easy to digest. Not as detailed as the earlier versions, which appeals to some and turns off others. I think you'll make a decision quickly enough when you play it once or twice.

You'll struggle to find 3rd edition/E:40k players, almost everyone either plays 4th edition/Epic Armageddon or NetEpic, which is an adaptation of 2nd edition.

If I venture outside my small circle I'd be more than willing to learn/play E:A. E:A seems more of an outgrowth of E 40K than a totally different game altogether. E 40k was/is a good place for me to get back into gaming as the last serious gaming I did was with WFB (I think 5th ed.) I like that E:A has more detail in regards to anti-personal and anti-tank etc., if nothing else that level of detail seems to satisfy a certain psychological need in obviously highlighting the capabilities of certain troops. I'm not totally convinced that this couldn't/wasn't reflected in E40k's firepower/assault values and perhaps special abilities. (these are of course moot points at this time).
The only issues I could see having in E:A is the close formation distance requirements and the Warmasteresque activation rules (but then again, I haven't played, so I can't really say). I also (having been lurking for sometime) have a dislike for changes in rule sets in general and like that 3rd edition rules and army lists are finalized.
I have appreciation for all the versions of Epic (the detachment cards from Space Marine would be an easy way to get organized, etc.) I simply choose the 3rd edition at the present, as it seemed the easiest for me and my family to have fun with. (actually we have had simply some of best gaming times ever so far)
This all being said, I think what I will be doing for most of the forseeable future is painting, lots, and lots of painting.
