Thanks for the warm welcome. I didn't mean to stop the discussion though
I think the idea, in Epic 40K, of simplifying the rules was good, but they went a bit overboard with also simplifying the units alot. It is impossible to seperate those two things entirely of course but I think a better balance could have been struck.
The simplification of units is what really pushed many veterans away I think, rather than the rules change. It has to do with fluff. - A good game is like a well engineered machine where rules combine with stats to define a balance of probabilities. This machine should preferably be covered in a resilient layer of quality fluff.
In Epic 40K the game mechanics became so lean that the luxurious fluff written in coordination with previous rules was hanging like excess skin with nowhere to go.
The special flavour of each ork Gutrippa, Lungbursta, Bowelburna and Gobsmasha all had to be rolled into the same new stats of simply a "battlewagon". The Eldar Aspect warriors where reduced to one catch-all category of close combat specialists (and one heavy weapons). All the myriad of exotic weapons for the different races and titans where still there in the fluff , but were all pinned on a firepower value or one of the generic superheavy weapon categories.
I like the idea of firepower and I like how fast units die (only roll to hit - then remove!) but I think they should have kept some more special-rules to bring variation to the units and their battlefield roles.

And welcome to the boards!
