Not sure how to go about putting beards onto bears, but this is a fantasy log after all, so let's not get hung up on trivial details …

For TOEG13 I will be taking a break from chaos and concentrating on a small force of MWG 6mm fantasy dwarfs. These are not designed for use with any particular game system, but I have based everything in multiples of three bases (plus some spare command and character stands) on plastic sheet cut to either epic or warmaster base size.

There are 74 regular stands of 4–6 figures each, I plan to paint between six and twelve stands a month (depending on type) for nine months. This leaves three months: one for planning this January, one for command stands and oddities, and one for incompetence on my part. That's not much per month, but what my last three TOEG logs have consistently shown is my inability to finish a project, so this year I am aiming a bit lower per month, spread over more months. Planned monthly installments as follows (not in order):
  6 ironbreaks
  6 cannons
  9 warriors
  9 warriors
  9 muskets
  9 muskets
  9 ram dragoons
  9 bear riders
  12 berserkers
  command stands and misc.

Everything is already assembled, including some command stand conversions, but I have yet to settle on a colour scheme or basing style. I'm not planning to start painting until Feb., the goal for this month is to decide on colours and buy the paints.

I'm considering green, and blue is not an option (my beastmen and undead are already blue), any thoughts?

This army will probably make me buy at least one 6mm fantasy army this year. The bear cavalry reminds me of the old Grenadier 25mm model, and I have two old Ram riders as well (Ral Partha, if memory serves me right). Good luck, and let the beer flow.

I'm excited to see what you do with the little guys, they are really fun to paint.

I like the little bearded ones, having their larger brethren at home.

Really looking forward to this fantasy TEOG. :)

Green sounds right, but I guess you'd want a contrasting colour on the bases. Or you could make them wealthy Dwarfs and try purple!

Purple was an interesting idea, but after some consideration I went with green anyway because a) I am boring and, b) purple is in the running for the dark elf army (that or orange). Ordred some Coat D'Arms, will be using their Dark Elf Green as the base green – I'm moving away from GW paints after the colour change and repeated pot changes, so made sense to start afresh with a new army.

Having said I won't start until February I am currently itching to paint them. I think this is just because the paint isn't here yet, once it arrives I probably won't feel like painting ::) I suppose undercoat would be a start.

green = with light slate bases then?

I've just bought my first batch of MWG miniatures. I will follow this with thread with interest to maybe get inspired to paint mine as well.

Cheers

Slate is certainly an option, i'd sort of like to get a bit snow in there as well, or maybe some red/dead grass. Might well just be sand painted a grey/sand drab colour for now though, not really feeling 'basey' ::)

After a false start with Royal Mail earlier in the week I got the paints today. Although this will now cause a further small delay as the pots are too tall to fit on my hobby shelf – a shelf above my general work desk juuuust big enough to accommodate a GW paint pot but nothing taller (the few taller paints i already had i kept on the desk).

Test iron breaker / test using camera on phone for epic:

Decided against grey slate for the base, as there will be a lot of dulled silver armour. Ordred some very short tuft – the figs are 4mm toe to eye, so don't want to hide them with towering 5mm grass :P

Looks great! The green and bronze are contrasting each other nicely.

But you might want to refocus on the figure next time or keep the minimum focal distance of your camera ;)
