I'm hoping this thread will encourage me to get on with some serious painting. Haven't had much time this last year as I was finishing my masters degree and pretty much rebuilding my house (which is still ongoing!).

I've quite a few armies to paint up (maybe 5-6), and I plan on sequencing through each, maybe painting up a detachment (or equivalent) at a time. However, this thread will be for my nids, which I have mountains of but I've already made a good start and would really like to actually have one completed army.

I'll start individual threads for the other armies I'm planning on painting in the '6mm' thread section, that way they be kept neat and tidy. :)

I'll load up some pics tomorrow of what I've painted so far (can't at the minute as I'm stuck in the lab working today) and then list all that's remaining from to be painted. I can then work through the list, ticking off each bit as I go. Hopefully the should encourage me to finish it. ;D

Doh! Got off to a good start. I didn't even finish the thread title correctly. Hopefully Apoc. can sort it for me.

I've finally taken some shots of the nids I've painted so far, but I'm not happy the way they've turned out. I took the pics under artificial lighting and the colours look wrong and a little blurred. But it's a start and next time I'll try and take future pics when there's some sunshine about!

Didn't realise that files had to be under 2MB so here's the other pics.

Very effective, great highlighting, uses a 'traditional' nid colour palette without looking dated :)

Thanks for the comments, guys! The old style colour scheme was what I was looking for after being inspired by the box covers and art work from the E40K era, especially the box art on the tyranid swarm box set (you know, the one with a whole two sprues of nids in it). They were coloured dark blues and purples with some bone colour in the there too. So I went for that. I'm fairly pleased with how they turned out but the harsh lighting in the pics makes them look a bit brighter than they are, and the highlights less smooth. My little canon digital camera can't seem to cope with close ups that well either.

I'm currently painting up 10 biovores and 7 carnifexes but I actually have mountains of the stuff. I'm going to make a full list of everything after work later so I have a check list to work through. I've realised that I have way too much so I'll be selling some of the plastics on eBay (included what I've painted so far, I have 17 full sprues of the plastics, whic is just a mental amount to paint unless you're painting by drybrushing or something).

That's not a little start, it is a massive start. Five years ago, I picked up some of the pre-Epic40K swarm boxes that actually contained 4 sprues for close to 20£. A year later, I paid the same for the box you mention and was quite miffed about just getting two sprues. It seems to be a regular GW policy, if they put out good buys (like the LotR plastic boxes) they realise their mistake and halve the contents, making it horrible buys instead. That being said, I still think the current plastic warhosts/sets are good buys. Too bad about Nids being lost, though.

Looking forward to that chitinous mountain being painted.

Yeah I suppose it does seem like a reasonable number of minis but most EA armies are based around small games of 3000ish points, but to me epic is suppose to be, well, EPIC! I always wanted a crazy sized tyranid army when I was in my teens but couldn't afford it. Ironically, that's when they were nice and cheap. If I remember they were £5 a box of 5 sprues. Now they go for about £40-50 for 5 sprues on eBay, which is pretty crazy.

I want to paint at least another box of the plastics, which is pretty much what's in the pics already. But I have loads of the metal stuff too, like exocrines, haruspexes, dactylis, hive tyrants etc., plus three bio-titans. I'm not sure at the moment but I think I'll sell the other remaining 7 sprues of plastics as I want to get on with other projects too.

If you're having focus problems with your camera, the solution I found was to stand about 2-3 feet back, use the flash, and take pictures at the highest resolution you can without zooming very much, then crop the picture afterwards. You lose pretty much all your depth of field using the macro mode.

Great looking nids so far! If you have extras, I could maybe take them off your hands? My 2013 TOEG is going to be Nids as well.

Thanks CRM. I was thinking the same thing with regards to taking the pictures but you've confirmed that for me. When I take the next load of pics i'll give it a try. The missus is working over night at the Hospital tonight, so I have some free time ahead of me. I'll go over my full itinary of Nid stuf and work out what I'll be happy to sell and get back to you via PM.

I've finally managed to get the next unit done for my nids - 10 biovores. I had intended to have got these done ages ago but renovating the house seems to be sucking up all my free time (by renovating I mean rebuilding. And I'm not a bulider by trade). I've started the next unit I'll post up which is bunch of carnifexes. I think I might paint a couple of biotitans after wards because it'll make a nice change size-wise.
