Post subject:  TOEG 2012 - Settra's Stronghold

Ok, here's my TOEG for the start of the year. I actually started this a couple of months ago inspired by the excelent dystopian wars range and their airships "mm...that would make a great overlord". That and their large war machines made me regret getting rid of my old Space Marine squat army so i just had to start a new one making full use of the availability of spartan and exodus wars minis.

Now, I had two problems that took me a full month to resolve: What stronghold and what basing.
For the stronghold i wanted one of the 3 classic squat stronghold colors: red, blue or green. Blue, well I had just finished painting ultramarines, for green, eh, i'd rather save it for a later Catachan army of something so red it is. Then the shade, the secondary colors, etc, etc. The basing had to contrast nicely with the main color but had a rocky feel to it to reflect the squat homeworlds so I came up with a nice solution after some 5 tests. As I've said, it took me a long time and plenty of tries to get just these two right.
Here's the result so far:

these were the miniatures that got me started (again) with squats. Again, spartan makes some great miniatures. The resin had some damage that i had to hide as battle damage with some painting.

This is a sample of the infantry. I've painted some 80 so far that i'm mixing up when i finish all of them. they're from the old gw squat sprues and exodus wars range and most have some small variation keeping the theme of red flak jackets. I feel this makes for a slightly irregular look that suits the squat infantry. Most of the exodus wars miniatures were converted in some way to change the biker gang look and steer more towards the gw style squat.

I can't stop coming back to look at those airships. TPainted the way you have them, they look *so*mad much better than GW's old Overlords.

Thank you all!
I've finished the artillery, a flight of gyrocopters, the warlord and the warrior and berserker brotherhoods. Finishing the leviathan and priming my remaining minis (another group of gyros and the thunderers) for painting. Looks like i'll be finishing this toeg this month if all goes well. mmm....might have to get something else done. Another warrior brotherhood looks like a logical choice.

Here's what i'm looking at now:

warrior brotherhood
berserk brotherhood

robots
robots
iron eagles+iron hawk
iron eagles+iron hawk
thudd guns
mole mortars

overlord
overlord
leviathan or colossus WE

Ulric, loved your airships. These indeed are great proxies for overlords and i'm planning on using more of the spartan minis in the future. I'll have to take some photos of the stuff i painted this month i i'll be sure to get some details of the EW infantry for you. Didn't like the long hair vs helmets on the gw minis so with some conversion and smart painting i changed them a bit to suit more the regular army style of gw squats (epic) and i believe it worked very well in adding some diversity.

Thank you all. I really have to clean up this topic with better photos and a bit more on these minis. Especially the conversions.
To be honest I just felt I had to rush what I could before the year's end :)
Painted a lot but my interests were all over the place this year...

Rastamann, I will certanly be on that big game and will probably bring some more people along. Managed to convert another player to Epic a few days ago. He's starting a Salamanders army right now.
