Nah Jervis shot that down back in the early days of Epic development. Demiurg were an attempt to do something new with the dwarf archetype, and were intended to be a different species entirely to the ab-human Squats. |

I always saw the Demiurg as a "re-imagining" of the Squats... Their separation from the Squats is only because the Squats had already existed in 40k previously. But even their name makes it obvious what they are intended to be - Demi = half, so that the Demiurg's name refers to their physical build just like the Squats'! I guess Jervis' comment pretty much fits that notion. |

Actually, This has nothing to do with demi as half. half-ling would rather evoke hobbits anyway, and indeed it is GW sanctioned word for creature similar to JRR hobbits. Demiurg is the Old Greek word for "creator", and is usually used as a reference to the creating principle/god/all-father in many religions. Some consider the word to imply that this creator is not concerned about good and evil. In ancient Greece, demiurgs were independent artisans, free but not bound to a comunity. They were often sought particularily after, specially the metal worker. So here's where the archetype come from. Remember Grandma Wendy rarely bother to make up a word (or even names), but most often use old ones for their creations. |

I didn't know that Demiurg were independent artisans in ancient Greece, but it makes perfect sense. And I know Grandma Wendy are lazy like that, but they sometimes do come up with their own names for armies or races... Like "Squats" and, er, "Blood Angels" for example! It's just that their names are often not as good as ones from old texts and cultures. |

Quote: Nah Jervis shot that down back in the early days of Epic development. Not true. Having spoken with Jervis personal and directly on the subject, the Demiurg are neither Squat or not-Squat. The decision has not been made as to waht to do with them and, in his words, they probably wouldn't do anything with them. In other words, they are what you make of them. |

He may have "opened things up" subsequently, but "before the fall" he did indeed shoot down any attempts to draw a link between the two, presumably because as you say the studio hadn't made the final call on their origins and he didn't want fan fiction to be leading the studio development process... Post-fall, I doubt anyone in the studio gives a damn what some of the fans get up to as regards the Demiurg, because they too ended up getting "Squatted"! |
