Actually it looks kind of yummy like this. I'd have mistaken it for a piece of marzipan confection...

Very very inspirational thread Apoc. I shall definitely be following this one with great interest :)

Ive been testing out lego cogs for the burrowing mechanism, but they are mostly too big or awkward, so i think ill scratch something a bit like the DKoK Hades.

Must admit, i have yet to consider the army colour scheme at all :P Black/dark grey with metallics and red/orange seems obvious but would look poor on lava bases. Or maybe all orangered rust, or possibly mucky white with a colour...

Um, wow! I'm lost for words really, heh! Very awesome indeed.

How did you get the textures on the various plates? Some look a little like chainmail links...

I have been looking at my Chaos Squat minis all week with the same dilemna. It would be easy just to paint them plain black, but that just seems lazy to me for some reason. Can't wait to see what you do.

The textures are press moulded, the texture is applied to super sculpy first and the greenstuff is then pressed into that. The chainmail looking area is just very light pressure from a small bit of plastic rod, the texture is very very light, just enough to give a subtle effect of interlocking bands when dry brushed but nothing more, i used the same texture on the barrel of the daemonic bellows for my Forge of Souls army.

Very nice. Did you do the over-lapping plates one at a time? and how did you get such defined edged? If it wasn't green, I would have thought they were cut out from plati-card.

One at a time, i cut myself a small plasticard press template for the defined edges and then press moulded it into the GS along with the texture.

Yes, your giant worm intimidates me and makes me feel inadequate.

Edited for 22% increase in humor.

The face on these guys is almost a mask, so I was thinking having the faces stand out in a yellow or orange on either a metallic blue or metallic purple armour.

If going with flat colours, and to get away from black, again a dark blue or purple may also work.

Red will do well with a wash, yet I will not do this as they would be too similar to my World Eaters and green is so Nurgle.

These are just some ideas I was playing with. In either case, I am thinking that the face will be the defining feature for myself. Have to give it a few test paints.

Well, dark colours, reds and purples are traditionally used for "evil" armies... And you seem to be thinking about lava bases (going by the model on the left)...

So what about if you did them as if they were made of molten metal? White base coat with a thin yellow wash, then build up to orange but leaving white/yellow in the recesses, and then blend through to dark grey/black on the highest points and the shoulder pads? The faces do look like masks as frogbear says, so perhaps give them iron masks with red eyes too? The guns could easily remain a flat black highlighted with a little black+teal to set them off against the model, but without them standing out too much.

That way they'd look dark without being either black or red. You'd probably have to refine a good system for painting them though (unless you're a fairly fast painter)!

Eeepp, not bad at all! Nicey!
The Squats: I'd go for colours similar to Khorne troops, red+metals.

A dirty red/black/metal/gold
would give them a real Chaos Dwarf look
or some tarnished(hope it is the right word) metal

How about metallics with a twist? Metallic red/gold, blues, greenn or purple. Using the citadel washes some interesting results ould be achieved. I'm not talking bright metallic red, but the washes could be used to tone a darkish metallic color with some interesting results.

Thanks for all the idea, very very helpful :) . I like the tarnished or colour stained metal idea, the squat on the lava is actually tin bitz washed with green and purple then with boltgun dry brush, but the colour is not very noticeable, red wash is a good idea. Ive since given the same squat a golden face mask and red eyes and he looks a bit better for it, also makes them stand out more from my dirty metal+orange necrons :P

I don't really want to do full khorne colours since i spent most of last years TOEG paining khorne :P
