Cheers Vaaish, I had a go at this and I'm much happier with them, the forge knights are now finished.

On everybodies advice I'm going with the undercoated minoris versions, they've just has a touch up with black spray and some extra details adding along with everything else which I want to paint before calling the army complete, well as complete as an army ever gets as I always want to add more.

This leaves me with the following to paint

-10 Skitarii stands
-5 transports
-3 minoris
-3 flak
-2 thunderbolts
-1 Tech lord

And of course objectives and scenery although I'm happy to finish these off outside of TOEG.

I like the eclectic mix of all the models from different companies/sources ... It's all good ! ;)

More of a cost saving thing rather than a conscious decision but I guess it does go to show the depth of support provided for our hobby by various companies and individuals.

On an unrelated note can anybody recomend a decent paint on matt varnish?

I was using a 15 yr old pot I had from way back when, but it's finally dried up and gone gloopy. I replaced it with the same stuff (Humbrol Matt Cote) but the formula must have changed as it seems to be adding a slightly gloss finish to my models which I dont want.

Works for me !! ;) And I use Testor's Dullcote spray ... However, I don't think it is available in the UK, I've been told Humbrol makes a good one too ? However, sometimes I've got'm a little too much shine for Testor's Dullcote too ? I think they may have changed formulas for health reasons ? :-\

1 of 3 minoris, The other 2 should be close on this ones heels, but I felt I needed to finish one to see what the end product would look like. I'm not entirely happy with it but with so much of te army still to go it will have to do for the time being.

I'm not sure why you're not entirely happy with it. I think it looks great.

Looks pretty solid to me.

One technique I use to make red "pop" is to highlight the edges with mixes that tend towards orange, red highlights through orange to yellow and then to white.

Cheers for the advice guys, I was trying to go for quite a dark red so I've started out with dark flesh and highlighted up to blood red, do you think I should go more orange than that?

Possibly why it looks a little off is with the camera and varnish I'm using, as up until now the red was pretty much the only thing I was happy with :-\ My concern was over the shaky hand highlights on the gun and the way the colours really don't seem to suit this model.

Check out the two shots below comparing the two part painted ones (finished red) and the final one with it's supposedly Matt varnish. The difference in shades is seemingly all down to how I've applied the varnish and how I've taken the picture, Note in the second shot the one at the back appears to be much more orange than the one at the front, but side by side they're identical.

Neither looks all that much like it does in real life although the varnish seems to be blending my highlights into a single colour which is quite frustrating given the length of time I spent working up to them. Am I doing something wrong with the varnish (too thick, too thin, not shaken enough)

I'd be really interested in your thoughts, is the red popping before the other stages or should It go higher?

Another option is to do a careful white highlight/dry-brush on extremes before your final red highlights. The white will give the final red highlight a much brighter/lighter look.

Having said that i don't have a problem with them as they are at the moment :) .

Nice! I really like that Minoris :)

I highlighted red with a pale light orange on my Space Wolf Terminators back in the day (old not so great photo), but more recently saw someone use dwarf flesh mixed in the red as a highlight and that looked good and more natural. Personally I'd avoid highlighting with white as I think one or other of the previous looks better. It kind of depends what you're painting and how you want it to look - for things like Saim-hann Eldar I'd use the orange, for other things a more natural dwarf bronze / bone highlight, for other things just highlighting up to a nice dark red like you have now and leaving it there.

Maybe experiment with highlights on a part of the tank you're going to overpaint metal/black anyway and see what you think?

Is that hull still in production? That would be perfect for me for a Minoris since all my weapons are magnetized.

From what I've heard no, not for some time. However I got mine relatively recently from here

https://www.connectstores.com/ralpartha/sp_29227.html (scroll down to morrigu fire support)

I was actually thinking about getting one more to use as an objective, a sort of land train carrying munitions and supplies that's broken down.
