OK, finally managed to get the second warhound done to finish the pack. Ive also got a reaver on the way (should be able to finish the base tomorrow. I have mentioned before that Im epically slow with painting (and I get distracted by other projects) so this is pretty good for me, even though Im sure Im massively behind how much I should have painted for a tale of gamers :p

And the reaver. I think I went a bit over the top on the heat colouring on the melta cannon (needs to be smaller next time) and some of the panels look a little flat in the pics (though better in real life). I think it needs a bit more contrast on the different panels next time.

How do you do the weathering? Is it powders or just a lot of very careful drybrushing?

I'm a bit afraid of using them as I'm not sure about "fixing" them, especially on such small scale models. When I try looking up powders I end up down a rabbit hole on some modelling forum where someone is spending 100 hours on a single model... I get intimidated and decide to wait until I'm better at painting before giving them a go. =-P

Weathering powders are tricky because there a number of different ways to use them depending on what you mix them with and how you apply them.

And yes they can be a bit worrying as you cant really remove them once they are applied. But they are worth a try. When I first used them I tried it on some plasticard I painted up in my chosen paint scheme to see how it worked. For a basic result I would advise using a medium GW drybrush and stipple on small amounts (a dark brown earth shade works well to begin with). Then rub the brush on some kitchen town and use the clean(ish) brush to smudge in the pigment you have stippled on. The key to this is everything (especially the brush) needs to be dry and it should be the last thing you do on the model.

Thanks for the tips! Maybe I would try it on 28mm scale first, myself.

Do you spray varnish your models?

I dont because it can make the weathering powders look less realistic. If you're going to varnish them then use a matt varnish and then apply the powder.
