I really want in this year with Space marine firehawks but real life is going to get in the way a bit. I might try for a hardcore catch up session in December though ;0

What were the rules on this?

I have seen comments that you have to paint 500 points per month. How many months does the competition last? Are you allowed months off to reflect real life impacting on gaming/painting time?

Can you use any part painted minis? I have a Space Marines Battle Company that I have undercoated and basecoated. Still need to do highlights and paint vehicles plus specialist infantry.

TOEG 2012 might help me to get these finished.

Cheers

James

It's not really a competition, more of a joint motivation thing. Months off etc fine, on the warseer version they have 2 'jokers' that people can use for months off due to work/life i think? Most people only keep going for a few anyway, I never even started this year as I became extremely busy irl just before kick-off.

There aren't any formal rules or organisation aside from basic 500pts/month goal, i just started the threads for the last two years, having been very involved in ToEG 2009 :)]

not sure id see much point in starting on ToEG 2011 now, as you might as well just make a regular project log? but nothing to stop you if you're feeling enthusiastic – go for it.

Ok- thanks.

For the next month I want to concentrate on Orks (Evil Sunz/Goffs). Then I will need to send a month or two just finishing off my IG SL. So I would be looking at starting Space Marines (Blood Angels) later in year, probably summer.

Cheers

James

That sounds ideal as it's started off over the summer last 3 years at least, see you in ToEG 2012 then :D

I was going to ask you about this generally. Is this board still active or have these now become project logs? Is it worth moving threads to the general painting board, or should we repurpose this one as a blog/project board beyond ToEG? (Personally, I like the idea of one thread per member for project logs here (at all scales and types of minis) and the other boards to show off completed minis and one-offs. What do you think?

Personally i've done nothing to move ToEG along this year in the way i had planned to. I had ideas for some group stuff and freebies, but I just got too busy and have been more or less out of the hobby in general.

ToEG seemed to work fine in the 6mm section – the only problem is the first month of so where the whole of the front page of 6mm just gets spammed with ToEG posts. This seems to work its way through after a while as people spread out. Moving it to it's own sub-forum solves this, but it gets very quite after a few months.

There are still several logs active from ToEG2011 in this sub-forum atm.

I think having TOEG separate from other painting blogs is a good thing.

There are several painting blogs that I follow and have bookmarked- we have some amazing scratchbuilding/converting/painting on Taccoms. Yet I also enjoy following some of the other painting blogs as well- I find it very motivational to see progress of other painters closer to my own painting ability. Painting a complete army can be very daunting and it is good to see others doing likewise.

And that for me is the attraction of TOEG vs other painting blogs. It makes painting a whole army seem less daunting by breaking it down into smaller more achievable chunks.

I notice Apoc commented that there is a burst of activity at start of TOEG but that it gets very quiet after a few months. I was wondering whether we could do anything different in future:

1) Start time:
Many of us gamers make New Years resolutions as to annual painting targets, but many of us (myself included) are slackers and too easily distracted. Maybe we should do TOEG to start each January to tie in with our New Years resolutions and give them a bit more structure.

2) Length and size of targets:
As has already been commented, for some army lists it can be quite difficult to paint 500 points per month which could be 2-3 formations. Maybe 500 points per month can be difficult for some people to sustain, which is why some people drop out after few months. Why not reduce the painting target to a minimum of 300 points per month, with a duration of 12 months but still have 2 months holiday to cover real life issues impacting on gaming/painting time.

That would mean that at end of year we would have a minimum of 3,000 points, enough for a tournament army, and in many cases probably more painted.

What do you reckon?

Cheers

James

I am inclined to agree in a way, but, this has been discussed at length several times and 500pts/month (or equivalent in other rule set) has always won out. If you only do 300pts one month, that's short of the aim but no-one is going to ban you or anything and you can catch up next month/do more before. In the past some people have committed to, and succeeded with, 1000 points a month. 300pts over 12 months with two joker months makes sense, but that seems very modle light for most armies and a very prolonged period to plan to take to complete 3000 points and very few people go for 5–6 months, let alone 10.

You can also plan what you paint around the time. Work always busy in October? well paint you great gargant that month for easy points. November look like it'll be a quite month? then paint the 20 stands of boyz that month.

Two ways of looking at the new years resolutions i guess. Good time to start because of them, but also people are already motivated. By the summer new years motivation has probably died away a bit, so maybe it is helpful to have a second group birst of enthusiasm in the year? It would certainly solve the problem of having ToEG 2011 bleed halfway through 2012, but leaves us a bit dry in the mean time.

Yes, ToEG 2012 will start here (or 6mm if it moves there), probably in the summer again, but see above discussion.

I'm in.
I'll stop after starting the 3rd model, but it's either this or burn-out :)
I'll go for my 'augmented imperial army' (i.e. all sorts of imperial stuff including squats as close allies and featuring robots).
I'm off t jump the gun ;)

Thanks Apoc- I guess if you wait long enough then same questions crop up!!

I'm happy either way- if we are going to TOEG 2012 starting in the summer then I will have couple of months tofinish off current projects before starting Blood Angels or Eldar for TOEG 2012.

Cheers

James
