Especially in the tournament scene it makes more sense to have a good number of activations, but in scenario play the forces can be balanced in other ways and therefore have more hefty formations.

Yep, the rules simply do not compare in subtlety and tactical complexity. EA is a much superior game. And Apocalypse is not more cinematic, it looks silly and cramped to me. From what I gathered, it can also mount a vanquisher or a laser destroyer.
