By NealHunt some years ago, possibly 2010 (from memory).

It was also debated on TacComs, so you may be able to search for it.

Fair enough one I've missed. Guess I don't use overwatch delayed for that long to come into effect

so, to clarify...

imagine you start with a couple scout formations on overwatch, what exactly are your options regarding turn one?

Apologies for the thread necro, but this appears to be the most relevant existing discussion, and it came up in a game today...

Agreed Jon - except that the ERC decided to permit "Passing" where the only remaining formations are Broken or on OW, to allow a formation on OW to avoid taking the test and failing. Hence the FAQ:-
Quote:
Q: Can a unit remain on Overwatch into a following turn?
A: If the Formation hasn't fired by the end of the turn, then they can remain on Overwatch into the following turn.

This FAQ does not exist in the NetEA rules PDF, and in addition it appears to simply restate what’s already in the main text, without allowing you to stay in Overwatch across multiple turns without making an activation test:
“Formations remain on overwatch until they either shoot, or they undertake a new action in the following turn. Note that this means that a unit can go into overwatch on one turn, and not shoot until the following turn.”

The situation was a garrisoning IG company (so they effectively went into Overwatch in a turn before the game) that received Blast Markers in turn one. So two questions:

1. Is this FAQ entry supposed to be in the NetEA rules page/PDF?
2. What part of it is over-riding the standard rules text that allows you to activate Overwatch one in turn and wait to fire or activate in the following turn? It doesn’t say anything about being able to pass on an activation.

You can only pass on the activation if you have no other non-overwatch formations left to activate, effectively ending your turn.

1. Yes, probably.
2. It doesn't over ride the standard rules and the overwatch formation can activate in the following turn.

If you want to stall and keep a formation on overwatch you have to activate them. IG with BM 3+ to activate.

Thanks for confirming the intent of the FAQ.

Due to the ambiguous wording of the FAQ, I strongly recommend re-writing the FAQ so that it explicitly mentions bypassing the standard activation rules. For example:

Q. Can a unit remain on Overwatch into a following turn, without activating?
A. If the last formation a player activates in a turn is on Overwatch, the player can choose not to make an action test for that formation and instead leave the formation in Overwatch.

The FAQ was dropped exactly for the reason you said, it restated the rules. It should be in there though it allow the formation to stay on OW into the next turn without rolling to activate and potentially failing. My plan was to comb through the threads for an end-of-the-year update, I will add this to the list.

I'd adjust the wording a bit from what Ian suggests. It should be so that if you get to end of your activations for a turn you can leave formations on overwatch till next turn. There's nothing in the rules preventing you from leaving two or more formations on overwatch at the end of a turn (and it's a common tactic versus rare turn 3 spacecraft all planetfall armies).

That wording was based on what you and Daz were describing on Saturday, which I understood as it having to be the last unbroken formation, rather than all remaining unbroken formations.

In case I wasn't being clear, the default rule as per 1.6 The Actions Phase is that all unbroken formations must activate, and neither the Overwatch rules nor the FAQ are written in a way that explicitly overrides this default. That's why I'm suggesting the FAQ gets updated to make it clear that formations in Overwatch got to ignore the default rule.

Yea. My understanding/interpretation has always been that you can leave a formation on overwatch if it is the *last* formation that you have remaining to activate.

I’d assume that, if you have multiple formations you want to keep on overwatch, you would have to roll to activate then all (put them ‘back’ on overwatch), bar the final one.

Hope that makes sense - typing this quickly on my phone...!

Any unactivated formations on OW at the end of the turn can be left on overwatch. You don't have to roll for any of them if they are all you have left.
