I have a rather large Squat army, currently unbased.

Currently torn between just putting them on the old school 20mm square bases, or using the rectangular bases (easier for painting), or mayber even the 25mm circular Troublemaker games bases!!

There's no right answer I guess but what would other people do?

I used the newer long bases for my squats. I like my epic armies to 'rank up' I think they look cool when it's a large infantry force. I would prefer something like the troublemaker design for smaller "elite" units. Just my preference. I can take a photo for you if you like.

For my Tau/OTC army I am cutting custom bases for basically everything. Makes it a lot easier to base figs exactly how I want then.

If it were me I'd go for strip or round bases, I'm not really a fan of the look of the old square bases. Plus they're harder to paint.

CC based armies might be slightly better tactically on strip bases as sometimes you'll be able to fit more into combat that way, but since Squats are more of a firefight / shooty army that isn't really relevant.

I like 20mm round laser cut ply bases from Fenris Games too, to throw another possibility into the mix, though these don't come with holes (but it's easy enough to use a 6mm drill bit to make some).

Here are a few quick snaps of my WIP squats on long bases. *http://combatchronicles.com/post/72502992909/a-few-quick-photos-of-my-squats-mounted-on-long

* the bases in the back that the bike are mounted to are from Warmaster.
There are some other photos at the link above.

GlynG is right about the tactical aspect for CC vs FF units - but all in all it really just comes down to what you think looks cool. IMO, If your battles are being decided by a few millimeters on the table then you're doing it wrong... but then again, I'm a fluff player, so that that for what it's worth.

I wet for square bases - mostly for the old school look, and because I painted my lo as Squatachans, and the square base fitted better with the look of a patrol or fire team advancing than the straight line. Leaving out the odd model from the 5 slots gives some irregularity in this case.
But I agree the new bases make for easier painting.

I'm going with hexagon bases.
Feeling that the "nut" shape works well with the mechanical idea of Squats.

Still haven't painted my infantry so no finished examples to show you.

For my OTC/Tau I'm using Fenris Games 25mm circular bases, with 4 inf per base (FG cut 4 holes for me). I will also use coins for tanks ect.
