Hiya

After months of playing warmaster I managed to get a game in using my nids again against Orkybob's Orks. The battle took place over the Superbowl weekend on a 4x4 table using 2.7K forces and full GT rules.

Having read the 3 current Nid variant lists I opted to try the Markonz variant. We managed to take some pretty good photos and for once I made some notes that allow me to report back on the battle.

I'm going to use Chroma's trick and post a taster here now as this will put pressure on me to actually finish writing the report up!!

Turn 1...

Garrisons:
Hive Tyrant plus Carnies on Nid Left behind hill (obj 3). Genestealers on Nid right on obj 5.

No teleports

Strategy: Orks

From his special seat in the head of his new Superstompa the mighty Warboss, Bobskull Gorkmeister peers through his tellyscope at the seething mass of bugs drawn up across the battlefield and starts to count them. Sighing to himself he mutters...?Lotz!?.

Picking up his new Komuminkator Device he shouts for his Flyboyz to begin hostilities....

The battle begins with an earshattering roar as 6 Fighta Bommaz thunder low across the battlefield straight towards the enormous Hydraphant.

The Hydraphant raises its massive head and braces itself for the attack. At the last moment the mighty Bio-titan shudders violently as a psychic blast rips through the oncoming planes. One pilot holds in head in agony spinning out of control and crashing short of the beast. The remaining 5 planes roar on delivering their payload with surprising accuracy! The hydraphant is left bleeding badly (losing  2 DC. No criticals).



In response the Hive Mind instructs the fearsome Nexus Swarm to march up the table to claim the middle ground. A position they would fight hard for in the coming hours.

Bobskull spies the armoured swarm?s march but decides to focus his attention on the considerably weaker genestealers who are blocking his left flank and are hunkered down within the battlefields on built up area. A quick bark from him sends Kult of Speed 1 doubling up to the building where the Kult?s Skortchas prove why they are much feared in urban warfare. Under a hail of flames the stealers break and fall back towards the main bug force.

Seeing the Genestealers falling back towards them the Tyranid Warriors of Swarm 2 march their gaunts up back into the vacated buildings thus shoring up the bug right flank once more..

Bobskull now decides that the armoured bugs are too close for comfort in the centre and ordered Big Warband 2 to advance towards objective 2 which is currently uncontested in the Ork half. The Warband move up without hesitation and with the support of their mighty Battlefortress unload a mass of shots into the Nexus Swarm. To Bobskull?s disbelief not a single armoured bug is slain.

Leaving a trail of green blood in its wake the Hydraphant attempts to double forwards to support the Nexus Swarm. Unfortunately the Fighta Bommerz have knocked out on of the bio-titan?s knee caps and he stumbles forward (failed activation). The Hydraphant makes a single advance onto a small hill.

From his position in the Head of his Superstompa Warboss Bobskull is struggling to see what is going on so ordered his Stompamob forward. Under a racket of clinks and crashes the unoiled mass of steel doubles forward towards the Ork centre-left. Just in extreme range the Superstompa fires at the Hydraphant placing another blast marker (now up to 5 BMs).

On the bug left Warrior-led swarm 1 marches up the flank to join the tyrant and carnifex swarm behind objective 3. The bugs are certainly taking the fight to the Orks!



Ignoring the new threat Bobskull orders his Big Blitz Brigade to advance forward and fire at the stricken bio-titan. With some superb firing the Super Zzap gun lands a huge blow causing  3 points of damage to the beast and causing him to break! (With just 1 DC left we rolled for criticals and 1 is caused. We roll for effect?.a 1!!! The beast survives ?.just).



Roaring with anger the Hive Tryant and Carnifex swarm on the bug left march fearlessly into the Ork half of the table threatening the Big Blitz Brigade and Warband 2.



In response Kult of Speed 2 who have been waiting out on the Ork right advance up the ork right flank, swing in towards the Carnifexes and fires. The think armour however proves too good and no kills are made.

The final move of the turn is taken byBobskull?s Big Warband 1 out on the ork left who double up towards the buildings firing at Swarm 2 as they arrive placing another blast marker but making no kills.

In the end phase the Hydraphant fails to regenerate a single wound leaving him with just a single DC for turn 2. Yikes!

Everyone rallies & nothing is spawned.

Turn 2 to come and its all going to kick off!!!...

Actually guys this was an epic battle in the true sense of the word. 2 hoard armies at 2700pts swashed onto a 4x4 table... It got messy to say the least.

The batrep is looking great and I'm sure the rest of it won't disappoint.....

Okay Orkybob calm down......! tsk I dunno these orks..

I've looked at all the photos we took and there are not that many from this turn. There are loads coming in turn 3 to look forward to though.

Turn 2.

No teleports.

Strategy is won by the Orks again!

From his Superstompa Warboss Bobskull surveys the field before him. ?S?about time we got rid of sum of deez bugz!? he declared and snaps of his first order to the Kult of Speed 1 out to his right.

Wide on the Ork left Kult of Speed 1 sustain fires into the Warrior-led gaunt swam occupying the small urban area in front of them. ?Targetting the small number of bugs not in cover the Kult manages to kill 4 termagaunts, 1 gargoyle and 1 hormagaunt.

The Hive Mind laughs at this meagure loss and shows the Orks how to dish out some real pain by calling out to the twin Tyrants of the Nexus Swarm.



The Nexus Swarm engages Kult of Speed 1 in a brutal display of power. 6 skortchas and 3 bikes are torn apart leaving a lone broken biker racing away for his mommy! 2 Haruspex fail to survive from the nid side.

The Hive Mind assesses the field and in particular the huge Hydraphant exposed on the hill with just 1 DC remaining. A swift decision is made and as the beast is in range of both the stompamob and the blitz brigade the Hive Mind retains the initiative and the Hydraphant scuttles off to see cover behind the largest building it can find.



Hopefully it can survive turn 2, regenerate some DC and play a part in turn 3.

Bobskull gives a wry smile as he witnesses the huge beast fall back. He decides its time to sort out the nearest threat which is the carnifexes.

His Big Blitz Brigade are ordered to sustain fire at the armoured killing monsters. Unfortunately Bobskull was halfway through a pork pie at the time and his order is not heard properly (fail) ? the blitz brigade fire normally at the Carnifexes killing just one.

Howling in frustration Bobskull retains the initiative and orders the intact Kult of Speed 2 out on his right to sustain fire at the Carnifexes. This time the order comes through loud a clear and the Kult let rip.

As the dust settles only one more Carnifex has fallen. Bobskull starts to fear the worst.

The Hive tyrant leading the remaining four Carnifexes decides to regroup the swarm but the Carnifex are not paying attention (another failed order). The resulting blast marker breaks the swarm and they shuffle back from the Orks a little.

Bobskull jumps at the opportunity to plug the middle of the field vacated by the Carnifex threat and Big Warband 2 advance up from the back of the field firing at the Nexus Swarm as they go. Nothing is killed as the Orks return to form on the shooting front.

Out on the bug left the warrior-led Swarm 1 doubles up over a hill ready to pounce on Kult of Speed 2. The Warriors shoot with their venom cannons blowing a buggy apart in the process.



Bobskull now makes a huge decision and decides that the Nexus Swarm must die if the day is to be his. From the relative safety of his Superstompa he gives the order and his Stompamob advance towards the Nexus Swarm. The armoured Ork mahines open fire ripping apart a Malefactor and a Haruspex and leaving the Nexus swarm with 6 BMs.

With only the Warrior-led swarm 2 in the buildings and a few remaining genestealers left to order the Hive Mind orders the ?stealers to march around in a circle close the Hydraphant. The confused genestealers do as they are told and stay pretty much where they were. (I did not want to activate Swarm 2 until the Ork Big Warband near them had activated).

Sure enough Big Warband 1 activate putting themselves on overwatch facing swarm 2.

The warriors of Swarm 2 debate whether to plunge in to an assault with Big Warband 1 but the Hive Mind calls them in the opposite direction. The advance away from the Warband to threaten the Stompamob, the warriors firing venom cannons as the move. The crucial BM is placed!

Turn 2 ends with Bobskull calling his flyboyz up. With 3 BMs from turn 1 there is a good chance the flyboyz will ignore the order and decide to have a steadying yard of grog. Instead the chance to fly to glory gets the better of them and they leap to their planes and take to the skies in a cloud of black smoke.

Weaving wildly round the field they finally get a clear shot at the cowering Hydraphant. Shots are fired and as the planes fly into the distance the mighty bio-titan crashes to the ground, dead!

In the end phase the Flyboyz pick up a BM giving them 2 for the turn 3.

During the rally phase the solitary biker of Kult of Speed 1 rallies as does the Stompamob.

For the bugs the Nexus Swarm spawn 1 Haruspex and a termagaunt and are left with 3BMs for the coming turn. Warrior-led Swarm 1 spawns a single termagaunt. Swarm 2 spawns a single hormagaunt. The Carnifex Swarm spawns nothing as they were broken and close to the enemy.

With both armies in each others faces the fur really starts to fly in turn 3 .....

......which begins with both Lictor Swarms emerging behind the Ork lines???..tbc..

Just caught this by chance, but if Bobskull failed his activation roll because of he was eating his pie, he shouldn't been allowed to retain.

Doesn't look like it made that big of a difference though, except for that one Carnifex.

Shaping up to be a nasty fight!

One thing though, if you fail an Activation test, you're not allowed to retain the initiative...

Turn 3 begins with both Lictor Swarms teleporting in behind the Ork lines.



The all important strategy roll however once again goes to the Orks.

Warboss Bobskull is right in the middle of the battle barking orders left and right and his boyz are ready to dish out some pain on the seething mass of aliens.

Over to the Ork right  Kult of Speed 2 ignore the oncoming tide of gaunts sweeping over the hill in front of them and veer to their left. The advance towards the Carnifex swarm and blast away for al they are worth. To the Orks frustration only a single Carnifex falls.

The Hive Mind wastes no time and orders the more central of the Lictor Swarms to assault the Big Blitz Brigade. The bug assassins charge deep into the brigade?s ranks and target the Super Zzap gun. Four first strike hits land home but unfortunately no kills are made! In return the brigade blows all 3 Lictors to pieces!!



Bobskull smiles widely and turns his attention to his left and to Big warband 1 currently on overwatch. He is about to order for them to sustain fire at the warrior-led swarm in the buildings then sees some of his boyz pointing behind them at the 2nd Lictor swarm. (Warband in the Lictor?s scout ZoC). He orders the warband to advance into the urban area but for some reason the order becomes garbled and the warband look at each other in confusion (fail).

Howling in anguish he orders them again (reroll) and the warband moves forward unloading all the boyz and fires at the Lictors. No damage is caused but a blast marker is placed.



The Hive Mind decides that the time has come to get serious. The Nexus Swarm assaults Big Warband 2 in the Ork centre. The fighting is brutal as once again the armoured assault bugs show their worth. Ork losses are heavy as the battlefortress is ripped apart along with 4 stands of grots and 7 boyz. In return the orks only bring down a single Haruspex!

The broken warband races away towards the Ork baseline objective. The Nexus swarm consolidate towards the Stompamob.

The Big Blitz brigade still jubilant at fighting off the Lictors are ordered to advance towards the Nexus Swarm but once again Ork communications are poor (fail) and the brigade fires from where it is. Another Haruspex is blown apart breaking the Nexus Swarm which stays put.

The Hive Mind scans the field and notices that the bug baseline objective is within march distance of two Ork formations. The remaining 3 genestealers march back to claim it.

Bobskull spots the speedy genestealers and orders his Flyboyz to sweep in and blow them away. The Ork pilots are still keen and once again take to the skies. This time however they fail to land a shot and just place a single blast marker.

The Hive Mind tries to order the remaining Lictor swarm to undertake a cunning clipping assault on Big Warband 1 but that damn single blast marker proves crucial as the Lictors refuse to budge! (failed on a roll of 1!). They pick up a 2nd blast marker for failing to assault so regroup hoping to assault blast marker free at the beginning of turn 4.

Bobskull surveys the battlefield and decides that the Nid blitz objective is still up for grabs. His own stompamob double forward to take up position in the centre of the field and open fire at the genestealers. Miraculously all 3 genestealers survive but are broken.

The Hive Mind realises the battle is not going to be won this turn and the Carnifex swarm double back towards the Nexus Swarm in readiness for a joint assault on the stompamob in turn 4. The Tyrant fires his venom cannon at the stompamob placing a single blast marker.

The Orks end their activations by marching the lone biker of Kult of Speed 1 all the way from the Ork baseline to claim the Nid Blitz objective.

The final Bug activation sees Warrior-led swarm 1 pile down the hill on the bug left into Kult of Speed 2. The entire Kult is wiped out in a furious display of brutality and to make matters worse the hapless Kult fail to kill a single bug in return!!

In the end phase Big Warband 1 Rallies near the urban area clearing itself of blast markers. Warrior led swarm 2 in the buildings nearby spawns 1 gargoyle and a termagaunt. The Stompamob rallies and clears itself of blast markers. The Nexus Swarm fails to spawn anything (broken). The Blitz Brigade rallies and is left with 1 BM. The Carnifex swarm spawns a single termagaunt. All the bug units rally but all have BMs on them.

Table overview....



At this point it is 1-0 to the Orks (Blitz).

Turn 4 is so close it hurts!!!
