OK, as I have neither the skill not the spce for a table like Jimbo or others have, I need to figure out a basic table covering.

I have had two thoughts, but would like some input.

1) I could go with the old stand by of Felt or Indoor/outdoor grass. These are a passing item, but may not be the best.

2) Cut a thin plywood sheet the size of the table. Paint one side a brownish tan and the other a generic green. Then just put this onto the table when I want to play.

Ideas, thoughts, opinions, just wwnt to post to say Hi?

Go for it.

Prior to my polystyrene boards I used a GW grass mat which was easy to use and store.

In terms of the plywood sheet, I know my polystyrene boards would be easier to store.

Epic game using GW grass mat:

I use a GEO-Hex mat, but tan cloth (desert) or even a white sheet (arctic), could work.   :)

Hi!

Dafrca, I use green felt you can get at a cloth shop to throw over the table and warzone (the terrain company) sells nice battle boards (the one I use in my pictures) that are quick and easy to use.

In terms of the plywood sheet, I know my polystyrene boards would be easier to store.

The reason I said it would be easier to store was that a plywood sheet would be flat and I could stack stuff on it etc if need be.

Real nice boards like yours have texture and in some cases buildings etc. and thus could not be stacked up or have stuff piled onto without damaging them.

No insult intended. In fact, trust me when I say I LOVE your set ups and the photos make me feel envious.  :;):

I use a stained and crushed (and loved!) GW mat - which gives it a more realistic look I think that an even sea of identical green.

Its very easy for storage - a primary consideration

Yeah storage is a problem for me too, that is why I havent yet embarked on tiled terrain.  I may get me a mat at some point, but for now, all worlds are a deep red....cuz thats the color of the table!  :D

That is funny. I had thought of going to a store and buying a "green" or "tan/brown" sheet.  :p

Great idea Maksim.

I use a plywood sheet.  It's pretty thin (3/8", iirc), but as long as it doesn't overhang the table by more than about a foot it won't sag.

I cut an 8'x4' into a 4x4 and 2 2x4 sections.  Many DIY stores will make 2 cuts for you for free when you buy it.  That size is convenient for storage and for different sized games.

As far as texture, I got a cheap-o can of gray decking paint from Big Lots and a bucket of sand.  I rolled the paint on extra thick and scattered sand, then let it dry.  Then did it again on the other side.  The deck paint gave it a very tough surface.

For a woodland side, I used a couple different colors of green spray paint.  For the ash waste side it was already gray, so I used a can of stone-texture spray paint and sprayed a light coat over it to give it a more varied texture.

It cost probably $20-25 in materials, took up the garage for a couple days while I painted them, and stores easily right next to the washer and dryer.

Hi Everyone,

One of the easiest solutions to mapmaking is to buy the cheap fiberboard sheets that measure 2'x4' and buy three of them to get a 4'x6' maps. They cost about $2.00 to $3.00 USD and can be covered with cheap latex house paint.

My Mars Forgeworld was built for slightly over $12.00 USD amd I have plenty of paint left over.

It's also easily storable (The boards stand up behind a door... ) and replaceable if they break. As long as I've been careful with storage, warping hasn't been a problem.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

For my cityfight games I have a grey felt cloth which works quite well.

I have pair of large 3' by 4' fibreboard sheets I use as my table- one side is painted black with spattered stars for BFG games and the other is due to be textured and turned into an urban table for Necromunda and cityfight Epic/28mm gaming.
I also use a white sheet for games with my snow scenry...

I just started reading this board... but here's my idea... if you want a green land-scape, replace your carpet with a green one... solves the problem. If you want a mars red land-scape, replace your carpet with red ones... solves the problem entirely. No need to pack things away (except scenary pieces) no need to think about storage space  :D
