I am looking for ideas and opinions on how to base epic models for an arctic look.

I have a marine army that I bought from a friend years ago that is a white color scheme.  The models were based on the old squares and primed white.  I have since painted them, and I would like to add something to the bases because they are rather plain.

Since he originally created them as an arctic force, I would like to keep that in mind.  And one of the local shops has an arctic board, so that's handy. :;):   However, I would also like to be able to field them on a woodlands board without them looking silly or heinously out of place.

One idea is using ice blue paint in patches and flocking with grass while the paint is wet.  The idea would be to create an effect where patches of grass are peeking through the snow.  The blue would give a bit of a snow-shadow background.  I could also mix in some brown flock and/or brown static grass.

Or, to go for a more rocky appearance, ice blue paint and a bit of gray/brown sand.  Same basic idea, but less woodland-ish.

The third alternative would be to just flock the bases with brown and green and leave the edges of the bases white.

I would like to hear any other ideas before I begin doing test stands.

BTW, someone (Tuffskull maybe?  For Grimnar?) was asking a while back about flocking for snow and talking about using baking soda and such.  In the US, Scenic Woodlands has a snow flock available by the quart.

When I was going to do 40K marines (I actually only painted one model - a Terminator Librarian with twin Lightning Claws) I went for an arctic look.  My figure was a dark blue, with whote contrasts.

For the base I simply primed it white (at the same time as the model) PVA'd on some sand, painted that with a thin layer of shadow grey (to create shadows  :L   ) and then drybrushed the top white.  It looked very effective, and I would do it again, if I use the same theme (unlikely as I dont have a winter board).

Anyway, I think I'd go for putting a little static grass poking through in places, and maybe the odd bit of brown flock for mud underneath.  I dont think it will ever match a green board, but a little of the colour on the base will make it less prominant.

Beginning with the white undercoated base, I'd crush some Filler's earth cat litter (any clay based UNUSED cat litter will do) to small size grains (or pass it through a sieve to get the finer material); mix with fine green flock; apply some PVA glue in small patches on the bases; drop the fine litter/flock mixture on the PVA.
Take a break, see how it looks, then drybrush lightly with white - but make sure ther PVA is dry, or the result is a major mess.
Clear varnish over the lot to consolidate. wear shades to protect from snow glare.

my 40K scale Orks is an Arctic force, but also fight in Cityfight and woodland as well...

Flock (actually model railway ballast)

Codex Grey

Dry brush white

I also have a WHFB Dwarf Patrol

for them I did virtually the same, but before the white drybrush I did a light blue drybrush for a more clean snowy look...

Hmmm...

Well, I was going to try to skimp because the paint job is not very good anyway.  But I think I'm just going to buy a container of the snow flock.

I'll use my standard mix of paint/glue/water, and base them with a 50/50 mottling of green/brown and snow.

Of course, it'll probably be a couple weeks before I get to it, so if anyone else wants to chime in, I would still like to hear more suggestions.

Ask and ye shall receive...

Black Gobbo #3 on the GW website has a bit about making arctic/tundra bases this week.

I've been working in our Foundry Laboratory for a few weeks now, and I noticed that small-grain quartzite (sp?) sand used for ceramic moulds for investment casting would make quite effective snow for Epic scale. It's white and cheap, although I realize it's not very available unless you happen to be in casting industry of course! :)

Hi Neal,

How is your snow board coming along?

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
