I agree with your overall statement. But if it is an item you really want and you would pay the "Buy Now" price to own it. Buy it.
An example, a friend wanted a paint ball gun. The opening bid was $9.99 and a buy now of $125.00 Well my friend figured he would bid on it because "he might get it for less". He lost the gun and the final bid was $220.00
Had he just hit the "Buy Now" he would have had it at $125 (about 1/3rd full dealer price) and he would have owned the gun. 
That is what I ment, "if you really want it" is a qualifier I use before I bid on a "buy it now" auction.

Hi!
Agreed. I, like your friend, got burnt not outright buying an item thinking that I could get it for less and it auctioned for much higher than the asking price at the start.
