Okay, okay. Understand that I was a kid in high school when this happened; I would NEVER smash an Imperator with a lacrosse stick today.
So we were playing Titan Legions, and I was facing a Chaos force. The Chaos player played some Chaos Card that let him control one of my units. He of course chose the Imperator. So I was like, "Do I get a psychic saving throw?" because my Imperator had void shields. Well, we couldn't figure out if Chaos Cards counted as psychic powers or not. We searched the books. Of course, my Imperator was at stake here, and hence the game, so it was pretty high-pressure. Instead of just deciding one way or the other, I finally got so frustrated that the rules hadn't spelled everything out that I got mad and smashed the Imperator.
Conclusion I: Years later I found the information that I needed in Armies of the Imperium under the Librarian or Inquisitor entry.
Conclusion II: The second part of the tragedy is that during some move or another I found the smashed Imperator in a little baggie. "That thing was nothing but trouble." I threw it away! I still have one of the thighs in my bitz box, for some reason. So now my Titan Legion, the Legio Bronto (that name is a hideous combination of Latin and Greek, if I'm not mistaken) has nothing more formidable than a Warlord Battle Group.

So the lessons I learned from the story are;
1) Walk over and smash the couch pillow and not the minis.
and
2) If you do smash the minis, keep the parts as you may regret it later.
Thanks for sharing, I have done such things myself so I know how you feel.

And now, the happy ending. I just did one of those "Buy it now" things on eBay and bought a very nicely-painted Imperator for USD39.99. Another gaping collecting hole will soon be refilled in my life. I am literally skipping around the apartment with glee. Okay, I was literally skipping around the apartment with glee. Now I'm typing. Though I am now five weeks in the hole with my discretionary spending, I am feeling exactly the opposite of "buyer's remorse."
See my new baby here!

I had a bid on epic eldar which closed today... unfortunately I was playing a wargame and forgot to put in a bid at the last minute, so someone else got them |
The key to avoid sniping is always bid your maximum, in other words the greatest amount you are willing to pay. So even if someone bids last minute and wins then you haven't lost the auction, it's just someone else was willing to pay more.
Example
You want a Ork Landa
The current bid is ?2.00
You are willing to pay ?5, but you only bid ?2.20.
So you bid ?2.20, you are now the highest bidder... however a minute before the auction someone else comes along and bids ?2.40 you have lost.
However if you are willing to pay ?5, bid ?5.
So you bid ?5, you are now the highest bidder, note that the actual bid is in fact ?2.20. If no one else bids you will win the auction for ?2.20 even though you bid ?5.
However lets assume our sniper comes along and puts in a bid at the last minute for ?2.40, eBay automatically raises the bid in your favour to ?2.60 and you still win (without having to check the auction).
If the last minute bidder puts in a bid for ?5.20 then he will win, however the maximum amount you were willing to pay was ?5 therefore you have not lost out.
Sniping last minutes at auctions is easily avoided if you bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the thing.
Sniping is easy to do, as people don't bid their maximum.

Good advice Jimbo, though my bid was actually on a New Zealand site, not e-bay, and it has a feature where the auction is extended to two more minutes if a new bid arrives less than two minutes before it ends, which makes last minute 'sniping' hard... However, with the small population in NZ there's always a chance u can sneak in 'at the last' and get something cheap because the other person forgot to do an autobid, or check at the end... as happened to me today The price i was prepared to pay was only a dollar more than the current price, so i was just hoping for a sneaky buy, I wasn't really trying to win a bidding war

Hi!
Thats what I do. I assess the value of the auctioned item and bid as high as I am willing to go and let luck take care of the rest.

Primarch | I too bid my max and then let the chips fall where they may.
I also do not mess with "Buy Now" auctions. If there is an item and I would pay the buy now price to own the item, then I do not bid in case I might win it at a lower price. I just buy the thing and that way I know I "won" the item.

Hi!
I use "buy now" depending on the item. There have been instances where you could get mint condition epic box sets way below what the final auction price is.
Its on a case to case basis.
