so finally making (the smallest) of inroads into my Tau project. I have shed loads of Tau that I've hoarded over the years and now that my IG army is nearing completion (well, not really, I keep finding more things to paint ??? ) I've started to do some test painting to finalise the colour scheme. Excuse the painting as they are a bit crude, and the models used were AI moels so not the best casts (hence the reason I used them for test painting).

I have painted up some test models with the main colours i'm considering, blue and Tau ochre. I know most poeple are bored stiff with the latter but I have always wanted to paint up Tau with the Ochre scheme. I also like the blue as a base but then its an almost identical colour to the flesh of the Tau, so I won't have a nice contrasting colour to bring out on some of the infantry. Decisions decision.

Personally, I love ochre Tau. I generally can’t stand doing an army in the studio color scheme, but nothing else really seems to work on Tau. IMO.

I like Tau ochre but i think you should put the tiger stripes on it similar to many of the Taros models.

Cool Horde.

I look forward to the THREE Manta mayhem.

Good luck settling on the colour tone for your world.

Look really cool!

I think either of the schemes work well - why not go with a colour that matches what campaign you can imagine these guys taking part in? Could imagine Tau being quite pragmatic with their markings if it means a few less get spotted and blown up by ranged fire.

Ochre Tau it'll be then!

I forgot to say that either scheme would have some kind of additional colour somewhere rather than just Ochre or blue entirely.

Jim, I love the taros pattern camo but not sure I can cope painting it over epic scale as I have so many to paint. It could crack my sanity and make things take so much longer. I will definitely be doing it on my 40K Tau for sure. I might paint up a selected few as show pieces maybe.

Could always just go for a more panzer stripe painted on instead of that stippled look. I mean, anyone is going to grok what you have going on

Envious on how many stuff u have. I missed out on hoarding Tau. How many battlesuits u got? The weapons so brittle on these Tau models.

No enough, really. I only have 8 Broad sides (total) - I plan on putting only one per stand. I have 18 Crisis suits total which I could put 3 per stand which'll only give me 6 stands total. A bit rubbish really.

These are all of the Australian variant so are metal. I had planned on buying more before the forge was scoured by GW.

Started the priming and base painting process. That's the total to paint for the hammerheads except for another 6 with twin fusion cannons.

As I'm keen on getting a game on with a friend (IG Vs Tau) I'm thinking I'm going to base paint, wash, and base every thing so it'll pass on the tabletop, and with time finish up the highlights and details.

There's some pretty good models on thingaverse I can link you to. Like approaching aquatic mammal level

The thingiverse recons are decent. I tried printing a scaled down riptide and that was an unmitigated disaster, though I reckon I could make it work second time round.

Just a quick update on the Tau progress. I have managed to base paint all the Hammerheads. I think I'll give them their wash with Agrax Earthshade and do the bases and leave them like that whilst I get on with base coating the next part of the project.

I'm really starting to think I need an airbrush though as painting that many tanks and trying to keep the paint smooth was hard. It would be easier to paint the larger minis such as the Mantas.
