Got my first game with Hive Fleet Dagon 4.1 against Argol playing Emperor's Children. Was an interesting experience trying out this F-ERC/NetEA hybrid in (virtual) reality. Argol was playing the list he intends to take to a tournament here in Stockholm, with a bucketload of Daemons. After the battle I discovered that I had in fact taken too few Biovores (they're 4 for 75, not 3), so the below army isn't completely accurate with v4.1.

Start of turn 1. Had forgot that I had taken a Trygon formation, so instead of tunneling they set up as normal. Lictors Teleport close to the Hell Scourges, just in case Tyranids happen to win initiative. Tyranids actually wins initiative!

Image
Turn 1, Activation 1, HFD: Genestealers engage chosen, kills 2 and 1 Rhino w FS, 1 gets killed in return, Chosen are wiped out.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 2, HFD Retain: Lictors engage the Hell Scourges, making 3 damage for 3 damage in return. Lictors are completely destroyed after combat resolution.

Turn 1, Activation 3, EC: Chosen formation engages the Genestealers w 4 daemonettes, makes 2 kills, destroys all but the Genestealer w/ Broodlord in combat resolution.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 4, HFD: Harradian advances and shoots at the Chosen formation, killing 1 Daemonette.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 5, EC: Helltalons bomb the Zoanthrope swarm, taking 1 BM from AA, killing 1 Biovore and 1 Zoanthrope.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 6, HFD: Minor swarm doubles into ruins and fires at Chosen for 1 BM.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 7, EC: Hell-Scourges Marshalls and fires at Genestealers, giving them 1 BM.

Turn 1, Activation 8, HFD: Minor Swarm doubles and gives the Chosen 1 BM.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 9, EC: Retinue doubles and gives the Swarm in the ruins 1 BM.

Turn 1, Activation 10, HFD: Hierodule swarm marches, discovering that the Termagaunts are pretty slow... Not an optimal configuration of that formation. Gargoyles would have been better.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 11, EC: Retinue engages the Genestealers, no kills but wins combat by 2, breaking the Genestealers.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 12, HFD: The Trygon formation that forgot to tunnel triples.

Turn 1, Activation 13, EC: Chaos Bikes triples.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 14, HFD: Flying major swarm triples.

Turn 1, Activation 15, EC: Space Ship comes in, gives the Harridan 1 damage, barrage does nothing, drops off retinue.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 16, EC Retain: The dropped retinue with the Daemon Prince engages the minor swarm in the ruins, kills 3, with 1 kill in return, wins combat by 4. The nearby broken Genestealer is killed.

Image
Turn 1, Activation 17, HFD: Dominatrix doubles and fires at the dropped retinue, killing 2 CSM.

Turn 1, Activation 18, EC: Thunderhawk w Terminators engage the Harridan formation, wipes it out for 1 dead Terminator.

Image
Start of turn 2. The second formation of Lictors teleport in the terrain close the the Hell-Scourges. Emperor's Children wins initiative.

Turn 2, Activation 1, EC: Hell-Scourges sustain fire at the Lictors, killing 2, breaking them.

Turn 2, Activation 2, EC Retain: The dropped Retinue with the Daemon Prince advances and fires at Trygon formation, killing 1 Hormagaunt.

Image
Turn 2, Activation 3, HFD: Trygon formation engages the Terminators. 3 Hormagaunts are killed for 2 terminators including the Lord. After two rounds of combat only the Trygon and a Ravener is left but the Terminators lose and are wiped out thanks to the "Gaunts" rule (which makes all Termagaunts, Hormagaunts and Gargoyles "super-expendable" (like Grots) when the Tyranid player initiates the engage).

Turn 2, Activation 4, HFD Retain: Flying Major Swarm retains, advances and fires at the Retinue. Some really lucky dice later 4 CSM including sorcerer are killed, and the Retinue breaks.

Image
Turn 2, Activation 5, EC: Retinue engages Genestealers while inside Rhinos. Leads combat by a measly 1, but manages to win it anyway. Genestealers break.

Turn 2, Activation 6, HFD: Dominatrix engages the Daemon Prince retinue, kills 1 CSM and 1 Noise marine for no damage in return, breaking them.

Image
Turn 2, Activation 7, EC: Helltalons bombs the Flying Swarm, killing 1 Harpy, 1 Shrike and 2 Gargoyles.

Image
Turn 2, Activation 8, HFD: Minor Zoanthrope Swarm advances and guards their own Blitz... The Biovores don't have too much range.

Image
Turn 2, Activation 9, EC: Chosen engages the flying swarm, and wins after two rounds of combat, killing all non-fearless units. Only the Hive Tyrant and two Shrikes are left.

Image
Turn 2, Activation 10, HFD: Hierodules doubles, fires at the Chosen and kills 2 Fiends. HFD is out of activations.

Turn 2, Activation 11, EC: Bikes engage the Trygon Prime, making 1 damage and killing 1 Ravener, for 1 Daemonette and 1 Bike in return. The lone Trygon Prime breaks.

Turn 2, Activation 12, EC: Thunderhawk flies in and picks up bikes and fires at broken flying Major Swarm for no damage.

Image
Start of turn 3. Emperor's Children wins initiative and gains 3 extra daemons.

Image
Turn 3, Activation 1, EC: The Thunderhawk takes its Bikes and engages the Zoanthrope Swarm on the Tyranid Blitz. Takes 1 BM from AA, kills 3 Biovores with 2 bikes lost. The engage is actually even but EC wins the roll-off anyway and the Minor Swarm breaks.

Image
Turn 3, Activation 2, EC Retain: Retinue by the EC Blitz that summons 4 daemons and Marshalls, but rolls a double 1, only removing 1 BM.

Image
Turn 3, Activation 3, HFD: Dominatrix engages Chosen, taking 1 damage on a Trygon. Chosen are wiped out.

Turn 3, Activation 4, HFD Retain: Genestealers engage the Daemon Prince and his Noise Marine buddy, taking one hit but the Dominatrix's supporting fire does nothing. Genestealers up by one but loses the roll-off...

Turn 3, Activation 5, EC: Helltalons bombs the minor swarm with the shrikes, killing both. 4 Termagaunts from the Nexus Swarm are killed as well.

Image
Turn 3, Activation 6, EC Retain: Retinue sustains at the nearby Trygon, causing no damage, but gives it 1 BM.

Turn 3, Activation 7, HFD: Trygon marches and contests the take and hold objective.

Turn 3, Activation 8, EC: Daemon Prince retinue summons 3 daemons and kills the broken Genestealer.

Turn 3, Activation 9, HFD: The remnants of the major swarm doubles and fires at the Chaos Bikes by the Tyranid Blitz, killing 1 which is enough to break them.

Image
Turn 3, Activation 10, EC: Hell-Scourges engages the broken Lictors, kills 1 but loses roll off by 1 to 5! Hell-Scourges breaks!

Image
Turn 3, Activation 11, HFD: Hierodules doubles and fires at the broken Hell-Scourges for no effect

Image
Start of turn 4. Neither the Hell-Scourges nor the Bikes rallies. Emperor's Children wins initiative, gaining 3 extra daemons, for a total of 14! Way too many to do anything sensible with.

Turn 4, Activation 1, EC: The Retinue on the take-and-hold summons 4 daemons and engages the Trygon, killing it for no losses.

Turn 4, Activation 2, EC Retain: Retinue on the EC Blitz summons 2 Daemons and sets itself on Overwatch.

Image
Turn 4, Activation 3, HFD: Dominatrix engages Daemon Prince. Two TK hits later the DP and its Noise Marine companion are history for no damage in return... Tyranids are actually pretty good at taking care of 3++ Fearless stuff.

Image
Turn 4, Activation 4, HFD Retain: Lictors Marshalls and moves towards broken Hell-Scourges, trying to make it harder for them to rally in case there's a draw coming up.

Turn 4, Activation 5, EC: The Hell Talon bombs the flying Major Swarm. 1 Shrike is killed and they break.

Image
Turn 4, Activation 6, HFD: Zoanthropes Marshall and moves towards take-and-hold objective.

Turn 4, Activation 7, EC: Thunderhawk fails to activate, Argol decides to save his Supreme RR for the rally phase.

Image
Turn 4, Activation 8, HFD: Hierodules Swarm engages the retinue on the Blitz! EC leads the combat by two but rolls a double 1 against a 5! Dagon wins the game 2 objectives to 0.

Definitely didn't expect to win this game, but some wild combat resolution rolls later, that's exactly what I did. Argol had some rotten luck with his Hell-Scourge BTS in this game, which failed to do much of anything.

My impression of Hive Fleet Dagon v4.1 is that is works pretty much as intended, but I really need to practice making formations a bit more. The flying Major Swarm was a real hit tho.

I found that the significant boost that the "ignore -2 mod for rallying" gives is way too much when applied to the entire army. The tougher Synapse Creatures like Trygon Primes and Hierodule Primes in particular become really hard to deal with. In v4.2 I've moved it to the Hive Mind Locus rule instead, meaning that only the Dominatrix and the Dagon Overlord formations benefit from it.

Looking forward to getting more games played with the list, plenty of types of formations I've yet to try out.

Thanks for reading! Would be great to have another group looking at this, me and Argol are pretty keen on getting this list going.
