Not sure how many people here will care, but FFG just announced a new edition for X-Wing

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/n ... d-edition/

(what? It's 1/270 scale, it's on topic! ;D )

Always been curious about the x-wing game. Been tempted by it or armada but never played either.

can't say anything about xwing (i hear it's addicting fun) but armada is amazeballz. I taught it to my (then) 6 yo and we play it all the time together.

X Wing has been amazingly popular from just my anecdotal view - lots of people ranging in age from 20s to 50s who had been lapsed wargamers all giving it a go or indeed, playing it exclusively. Definitely hear a lot of grumbling about having to do a bit of a Games Workshop and rebuy things in order to play a new version, though!

X-Wing is an amazing game. I have never found another wargame that more perfectly captures the feel of what it is supposed to represent. When playing it really feels like you are zipping around in a Star Wars space battle at breakneck speed.

In recent years it had started to get kinda bloated with a bunch of upgrade cards that were meant to try and fix balance issues. The new edition is getting it back to its roots and FFG is taking steps to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Needing to buy more stuff to make your existing collection playable is not a totally unfounded complaint, but they are offering conversion kits for each faction to update existing collections to 2.0. The main people complaining about the price of those seem to be people with huge, primarch-load size collections (hyperbole) who are upset that a single $50 conversion kit won't let them play with all 200 of their ships at once.

Curiously, the conversion kits would probably be a really affordable way for someone to start playing the game. The remaining stock of 1st ed ships will probably go on steep clearance discount, so after getting the new core set this fall. someone could pick up a bunch of those and a conversion kit and end up with a sizeable collection for a single faction for way under retail price.

Armada is also a good game, but I, personally, don't think it is as good as X-Wing. While X-Wing feels like you are flying a starfighter, Armada, to me, always feels like I am playing a game. I don't get the same sense of immersion. That said, it is still a really good game, with awesome models and some truly innovative mechanics to encourage long term planning. There hasn't been any release for it in a long time though, which has a lot of people questioning FFGs commitment to supporting it.

I am not a huge Star Wars fan - but even I had to burn up some willpower not to buy a Rebel or Imperial fighter wing for X-Wing. The low entry cost is great. Having that nice starter box set, not needing any more terrain than throwing the cardboard asteroids on a table - plus only needing a tiny ~3 foot square play area makes it a lot more attractive than a Warhammer box set for a lot of folks.

One thing I don't see people praise enough I think is the amount of custom art that FF commissions to put on their products. Every single card of equipment or pilot has a nice bit of digital art on it.

Speed of play is an important aspect too. Most games can easily be completed in less than an hour, yet the game still has a bunch of depth because individual turns are so fast. Unlike WH where the games are limited to 6 rounds, and tourney games frequently don't even get that far within a 2 hour time limit.

Stop it, you have me reaching for my wallet!!

So to those who have played both. Which is easier to learn - X-wing or Armada? My wife and oldest occasionally play games (BB and Shadow Wars) but to keep them interested it needs to be easy to learn

X-wing is unquestionably easier. I can teach someone the basics and have them playing in 5 minutes. With the release of 2.0 only a few months away you’ll definitely want to wait and start with the new core set though.

Thanks for the feedback folks. While I am aware the second edition is coming I had been hoping to pick up a cheap used first edition to see if the family liked it. Will wait till the second edition is out and see what the differences are

Good lady wife got me a copy of this for Xmas along with a couple of extra ships. Not played yet but hoping to give it a go later this week. That said I have a mountain of ww2 vehicles to build as well so may have to wait....
