This list is no longer being developed, but I'll keep the thread around for those that are interested in it.

Looks like a fun list :)

Comments:

- Shouldn't the Chaos Cultists be able to select an Aspiring Champion as their leader, like in the LatD list? It seems like a thing the Alpha Legion would do.

- Sabotage seems a bit random. Wouldn't it be better to let the player decide the target of the sabotage (with no formation targeted more than once)?

In version 1.0 they had a unit of Alpha Marines. I removed that because there was inconsistency with the "Coils of the Hydra" rules that I didn't like. Having an Aspiring Champion unit might be a suitable replacement, I guess that's what people expect.

I nicked this rule from the French Alpha Legion list, and there they can pick out the unit they want to sabotage. I found that a bit too powerful, but maybe it would work.

I like where this is headed :)

A couple of comments:

-> New special rule "I, Alpharius": The supreme commander is no longer a specific character, but all Alpha Legion Lords are considered to be the supreme commander. Rule adapted from the French Alpha Legion.

Distinctive, easy and fluffy. Shouldn't it be "I am Alpharius", though?

-> Macharius -25pts

I like the Macharius, but 200 seems a bit on the low end...

No, that's intentional. It's a reference to this excellent series:

You might be right, but since they only have a 15cm move, a very small unit size and 2 DC each they have some serious limitations. All the other choices in the same section can garrison for example. And since you only get to buy one per Cultist unit, buying Macharius means no thudd guns (probably the most strategic choice) no rough riders (w daemons!) or mutants (the cheapest and probably most resilient choice).

Would be interesting to see how it works out in practice of course. Hopefully I'll be able to test the army in TTS in the near future.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Alpharius

For my first jump into Epic 40k I would like to put together a painted :o Alpha Legion army based on this list hopefully highlighting there nature and with a varied set of miniatures. Plus i have a wicked color I loved on my 30k Alpha Marines.

I am surprised by how much of the army will be cultists, roughly 25%? Can you give me a suggestion on an army to work toward or what you are currently running or have run? It would give me a basis to see what you have tired or are trying. At the moment i am working on a group of marines and transport vehicles so have a lot of flexibility for the rest of the list.

Not to take away from the series, but wouldn't it work better as a reference to Spartacus? Or Negan I guess :)

Yeah, in the fluff the mainstay of the Alpha Legion is made up of Cultists. The Alpha Legion uses them as cannon fodder, and while it would certainly have been possible to make the Alpha Legion Marines the main unit, this way the cultists are brought to the fore, which makes the list a bit of a cross-over between CSM / SM / 30K and Lost and the Damned.

I have yet to actually get this list on the table, so I'm not totally sure what works. The list is still experimental after all, I started writing it just a few weeks ago.

But I can definitely say that you probably need at least 2 units of cultists, possibly even 3 depending on what you want in the other two sections. Having one or two units of Alpha Legion marines is probably a good idea as well, they're really flexible and gives access to the Support Section. After that, it really depends on how aggressive you want to be in terms of activations, if you want to go in a space ship, etc etc. A big choice is whether you want to have a formation of Super Heavies, and which specific type of these you want. They're a pretty good BTS (Break Their Spirit victory condition), and they have serious firepower. Air Assaults are really nasty, so having one unit of Terminators that can go in a Thunderhawk is very useful.

At they end of the day it's your call what you think is fun to play. Assuming that you mostly want to play with the Alpha Legion Marines, and not have too many cultists, this list might be something to be inspired by:

A Spartacus reference would be even better, I agree. Just have think about a good quote...

edit: Aha, wasn't familiar with that reference. "I'm Alpharius!" would work really well.

I am not sure that your suggested list is legal under the terms of unlocking support formations. Can 3 support formations be unlocked with only the 2 marine formations? Same with the Cultists and the formations they are unlocking.

What would you use for a fire raptor model?

When i was looking at the list and what it had to offer my worry was it going against the other 2 lists I was considering and will probably also eventually collect. That would be Minervan Imperial Guard and Orks with a Great Gargant. Does your suggested list have the ability to face off against Warlord sized formations even in small quantities? Or is it a combination of hard hitting marines and quantity of squishy infantry at the expense of a lot of those Big AT weapons?

Without experience playing games at this scale and the lack of good youtube games my knowledge is very theoretical. Heavily objective based game so high mobility is paramount but also with a combination of AT in quantity for vehicle popping and Heavy AT for large targets but not at the expense of AP for the large infantry formations. The terminators are going to be a must I think and your slant toward air assets is also a fun twist.
