Definitely two kits. I'm gonna wait a bit with the Skinnerz since (a) we don't have a clear aesthetic for their ships yet (there aren't any models) and (b) I would imagine that many of the early Skinnerz asteroid bases we the Novan mining colonies where they were forced to labour anyways.

Browsed through NASA's database and found a relatively high-res asteroid, so I thought: lets try to make a Novan mining station. I imagine that most mining would be done on asteroids, basically strap a whole bunch of engines on them and then suck it dry.

I'm running into a couple of issues though:
1) NASA doesn't have many different high-res asteroids files, most are pretty low resolution and just look like blobs.
2) These will be pricy to produce since they are basically massive chunks of material that need to be printed, as solid models they'd also be rather heavy, unless you go for resin.
3) One of the fun things with asteroid stations and such is the modelling itself.

A sollution is to make a modelling kit. There are many ways you can make easy asteroids as seen here and there. But a small baggy of 'station bits' could really add a bit of character. So various thrusters, turrets, buildings/towers, landing bays, docking stations, etc.

Your thoughts?
Hey ! :eh Those Could be used for Ork Drop Roks ! There were rules for those somewhere 'round here ? :sos

Asimov? How so? (Im actually really curious since I haven't read the Foundation series)

I did quite enjoy those books, some interesting ideas! Without spoilering too much, the main premise is that a visionary character sends off some colonists to a distant planet with the goal of their new society becoming highly technologically and scientifically advanced as the rest of human society collapses elsewhere in the galaxy. When this society (known as the Foundation) emerge back onto the galactic scene and start to battle the remaining aggressive human factions, their miniaturisation technology has advanced so much that ships needing a handful of crew are the match of the gigantic battleships constructed before the galaxy collapsed. And, of course, small ships have a lot of advantages over large ships in terms of cost, logistics, and mobility.

On the topic of asteroid mining: woah! Taking a real asteroid and mine-ifying it is an ace idea! One suggestion might be about the placement of engines: I wonder if they're better placed haphazardly around the asteroid, or more like an ordinary space vessel with them all at one end? I could imagine a space station built around one end of the asteroid, for example. Anyways, food for thought!

Also, I thought it was too much of a coincidence not to take a screenshot of this Tapatalk ad:

Regarding the engines on asteroids, I've been doing some thinking on the matter. We could either go full GW logic here and simply place the engines exactly the same as the ships (all on one side), or go for something more realistic. My preference is for the second. The reason why I went for something more haphazard was because the asteroid needs to move and turn in all sorts of directions, this is also the main issue with 40k ship designs (or most sci fi ship designs).

And then there is probably my favourite scifi show at the moment, The Expanse...combining kick ass scifi with some sense of realism when it comes to space. Take a look at this scene, they use tiny drones that attach themselves to the target they want to move, the drones are basically mobile thrusters. I could imagine something similar being used as well here, it's a lot cheaper to produce (you could reuse such drones whilst static thrusters can't really be recycled that easily).

Need to do some more thinking here. But since my preference is still to do a bits kit for the asteroids (people can make their own asteroid and add these bits on it) I can let people themselves decide where they want those thrusters. :)

The System Ships are as good to go, any final feedback before I ship them off for printing?

They kinda vary in size, they're more or less between 15mm and 20mm long.

Feedback needed. I'm about to submit these for printing, just need to know if the missile pods should be pointing straight forward (Elites on top) or slightly up (Elites on the bottom).

Definitely slightly up. Nice models! What are these, some specialist set for the heavy armoured Elites?

They are basically a sort of barrage variant of the Siege Armour Elites. Back mounted missiles pods, wrist mounted targeting devices and all that. I guess some people here might want to use them as Ultramarine Fulmentarus Terminators or Iron Warriors Tyrant Siege Terminators.

Aha. I thought that they are part of heavy weapons set for not-Terminators :). My Deathwing would really appreciate set like that.
