Do any of the Guard lists have bike companies?

nothing that is specifically bikes because they've not had them since 2nd edition and the stats in EA would basically be exactly the same as rough riders, just with another name so the count-as principle would come into effect. They're bountifully used as such to be 'high tech RR' in EA however (my own collection in fact uses them as such as I don't like horsies)

Personally I would say they have 35speed instead of the rough riders 20 but no first strike...same cost

They'd be as fast as a land speeder then and they go 220kph ;)

But like I said, guard don't have bikes anymore so not present in any lists right now. Jarvis marked them up as being comparable to a RR in the original rulebook so the community has generally seen fit to use count-as however.

If you and your opponent are cool with them as such though go for it. The lists and units are guidelines for friendly play and even the designer notes suggested that you should do whatever you want to make the game your own (play around with stats, formations, mixing units, etc). The lists are generally built for balanced tournament use and to prevent min-maxing and power gaming as much as possible. At home though go cray cray :)

So for zippy bikers I'd use the size as the RR formation but 35cm movement is way more beneficial to Steel Legion and guard in general than first strike because of the ability to easily set up cross fire bonus. I'd suggest a +25 to +50 cost over RR.

Let us know how it works out!

Mossinian* Rebels have them, they're the adversaries in the fan written Krieg supplement, the formation is balanced but the list only really works in big siege like slug fests!

*I can't remember exactly how that's supposed to be spelled which is mad considering the number of times I wrote it!!!

The obvious context here is of normal unagumented PBI, not genetically altered post-humans who may or may not also be granted supernatural powers, who thus lack their almost preternatural reflexes and abilities said powers bring...but yeah sure. ::)

But yeah as Rug points out they were is the mossnian rebels, which I had totally forgotten about, largely due to the fact they're actually not on the TP page. Is this an error or was the list never considered balanced for tournament use? I mean PFE and I are not trying to balance the Attilan Rough Riders list for general use outside of Mechanicum scenarios so not a crazy thought after all.

praetorgradivus, check out the rebels list then here in Siege => http://www.net-armageddon.org/page/fan-supplements

125 points for rough rider stats plus scout is broken since you get 6 of them.
The two list may be balanced against each other in that supplement (or not, I didn't do an in depth analysis) but that doesn't men the Rebel list is balanced against the current tourney approved lists.

35 speed doesn't represent the speed you think it does.

If it did, Rhinos would be going at over twice the maximum speed listed for it. n the specs released by GW

It has always been that the tactical speed of jet bikes and their actual maximum are different.

Yes the Bike = Cav sounds good to me ... And/or l think you may want to look at the Siege link JZ posted also. Plus may have to look at the speed as already noted. But I'd think a bike can go faster that a horse. But I've only rode a horse once in my youth but never a motor bike ... ^-^

BTW in SM1 the IG had Bike and Cav Companies as well. IIRC so did SM2/TL ... 8)

Sorry, I should have been clearer that I was referring to the 35cm speed shared by Marine Bikes & Attack Bikes, Eldar Jetbikes and Ork Warbikes rather than a 'real-world' speed of 220kph. :(

As praetorgradivus says, 35cm game-speed doesn't equate directly to a maximum speed of 220kph, or Rhinos would have a speed of 15-20cm, infantry 2-3cm and Eldar Jetbikes upwards of 100cm (as far as I can remember, they're only just subsonic).

I have to admit, I don't miss the days of needing to use trig functions to work out when the 350" per turn Eldar Jetbikes were finally going to be able to bank around far enough to make it back onto the 6x4' 40k table...

You could conceptualise it as the bike troopers would use the bikes for transport and then dismount to engage perhaps? Which would slow them down a bit.

As the concept of riding a motorbike while firing a gun is pretty ridiculous unless you're superhuman in some way (either a space marine, or the terminator firing a shotgun while riding a Harley)

This would also tie in with how most cavalry and actually motorcycle-mounted troops fought during WW2.
