For the last Codex Lugdunum events, the Epic week-end of the Crazy Orc (Lyon, France), we used Mighty and Planetary Empires upgraded rules. That worked very, very well ! It's simple and effective !

The rules we used can be downloaded on the Laïtus Prime Tribune (in French) :
