So a couple years ago, I stumbled onto a small hoard of Epic figures at a local swap meet/flea market.

I grabbed as much as I could, of course, and ended up with a large squat army and a lot of chaos/imperial plastic infantry.

I've been painting the infantry for my LatD army, but the squat stuff was already painted, so it sat on the shelf.

The more I looked at it, the more I wanted to hit them with a wash and new base paint, so this thread will log that process.

Attached is a pic of the Squat army.

Don't think there's much wrong with those squats. I'd slap a bunch of Vallejo sandy paste on them and maybe some crushed charcoal. Cover with some army painter quickshade strong tone and you'd done in a day.

Sgt, in that game you and me and Jed and Jason played, I was super impressed with how that army looked, even if I didn't particularly like the mole mortars and all that AA fire!!! :)

I dunno man, I honestly don't think much more work is required to really make that army sing. Maybe a brown wash on everything, including the bases?

Yeah gotta agree with the others that army looks great to me!! Unless you have nothing else to paint I'd be tempted to leave them... Maybe we'd be able to see the problem if photo resolution is higher, but do we really look at figures that closely on the gaming table?

Guess we should ask, what's specifically wrong?
the figures? Use some devlan mud or quickshade.
the bases? Sandy paste (or other comparable product), get a brush and work it in and wash/paint

Firstly, looks like a great collection. Personally (if I had a new army) I would want to make it my own, with a paint job. The pic is good and the current paint scheme looks clean however, it may benefit from further shading/highlights. There are also a few bases with their slots (holes) showing which I would need to fill/re-base. Ultimately, I would only make changes if your confident of improving the overall look. All the best.

Oh yeah didn't notice that at first glance - fix those!

Hi all, yes, the army looks pretty good as-is, but the bases need some work. They're loosely (and incompletely) covered with sand and little pebbles. I'll take a closeup shot to show you guys what I mean.

I already have some Vallejo black lava texture medium, and I think I might go with that, but have to do a test beforehand. I won't be trying to pull models off their existing bases, just painting over the old suff with texture and repainting with colors I like more.

Also, I prefer vehicles and guns to have their own bases, so they'll be getting all new bases (maybe except the land train, unless I can figure out a way to base the cars and still have them link up).

Don't worry--it will be an improvement. I definitely want to keep the look of this old-school paintjob, I just don't like the "hasty" looking base jobs.

You could use pill shaped bases for the land train, by pill I mean rectangular with rounded ends.
