A few weeks ago Onyx & I bashed EPIC style, his smexy Black Templars vs those dirty Abhumans in their big war engines (compensating much?!)...apologies to Onyx for any errors as this was written a few weeks after the game. Onyx, please feel free to make any corrections :)

Squat List:
Overlord
Colossus + Iron Hawk spotter
Iron Hawk Recon Squadron
Khondgin Trikers
Overlord
Colossus + Living Ancestor + Iron Hawk Spotter (BTS)
Cyclops
Holdguard + Skysweeper + Hearthguard + Grandmaster of the Guild + Spartans

Codex Marines List:
Devastator Detachment + Land Raiders + Hunter + Supreme Commander
Land Speeders
Thunderhawk
Terminator Detachment
Terminator Detachment
Terminator Detachment
Predator Detachment
Warhound Titan
Warhound Titan

Pre-deployment:
2 x Terminator Detachment opting to teleport
Terminator Detachment loaded into Thunderhawk

Deployment:
Marines set up along their right flank with a refused flank…Land Speeders set up a screen in front of the Predators and Devastator detachment. A Warhound is deployed in each back corner of the SM deployment zone. Essentially the SM were trying to stay out of range of the indirect fire weapons of the Squat forces.

Squat forces castle up around their Blitz objective in the middle of their deployment zone. The Iron Hawk Recon Squadron set up as a screen to ward off those pesky teleporting terminators and Thunderhawk air assaults.

Turn 1:
• Marines win initiative roll
• No teleporting terminators
• Warhound A moves down a flank and fires at Iron Hawk Recon Squadron
• Overlord A doubles forward and shoots at Land Speeders, its battlecannons shooting down a Land Speeder.
• Predators move forward and blaze away at the advanced Overlord, sending it crashing to the ground, ablaze from multiple lascannon hits and critical damage.
• Trikers move up the board, keeping between cover
• Warhound B moves down other flank and into cover
• Overlord advances and fires on the Predators
• Devastator Detachment advances and shoots at Overlord B, a glancing shot managing to ignite a fuel cell, sending it crashing to the ground.
• Cyclops fires its main gun to vaporize the only Predator it can see.
• Holdguard go on Overwatch.

Turn 2:
• Marines win initiative roll
• No teleporting terminators
• Predators advance closer to objective and fire on Iron Hawk Recon Squadron, destroying one and breaking the unit.
• Air Assault against Colossus B and its Iron Hawk spotter, which hold the left side of the Squat line. The charge draws overwatch fire from the Holdguard, which finds chinks in the terminator armour. After the engagement the surviving terminators were left defeated after some shockingly bad armour rolls. They fled into cover and the Thunderhawk was destroyed. Iron Hawk is brought down and the Colossus takes some damage.
• Colossus B advances towards objective
• Warhound B fires on Trikes, sending some of the 3 wheelers crashing into the dirt.
• Devastator detachment moves to control an objective and also fire on broken Iron Hawk Recon Squadron, wiping it out.
• Trikes assault Warhound B and are swatted aside like small insignificant insects.

Turn 3:
• Marines win initiative roll
• 2 terminator detachments teleport in, blocking the paths of the Cyclops and Colossus A
• Devastator detachment moves to control an objective and also fire on broken Iron Hawk Recon Squadron, wiping it out.
• Land Speeders, Warhound B close on Colossus B and their combined fire strips its shields and leave it with a single damage point – broken the Colossus stands its ground
• Colossus A and Cyclops fire on the terminator detachments that appeared in front of each of them. They decimate their targets and break both terminator detachments. Although focused on decimating the blocking formations they remained stuck in their deployment zone.
• Warhound A and Predator detachment secure objective

Marines win 2-0 (They Shall Not Pass & Defend the Flag)

Key Points:
• Squat War Engines very versatile except they are slow – they deliver serious hurt at just about any range, able to deliver it as direct or indirect fire.
• Overlords are fragile – definitely a glass cannon unit
• Easiest way to beat the Squat WE list is to deny it mobility – ie kill the mobile elements and the army struggles with claiming objectives.
• The list structure is quite restrictive at lower points values, but that is what it should be…it reminds me of a Titan list, if u go for quality over quantity, then ur looking at a pretty small activation count at 2-3,000 points.
