I've been hanging around here for a while now and I thought it was about time I pulled my finger out and got an army sorted. I've been really inspired by the talent regularly on display around here so I thought I'd start a thread to keep me motivated.

Long story short, I've got a whole pile of Tyranids (among other things) waiting to see some paint and I will being starting a TOEG thread soon. That said, it's the big monsters that really caught my eye with this army. After seeing WarmasterNice's excellent tyranid force from a while back, along with the work of plenty of others, I thought I'd try my hand at something I've not seen before - a 6mm tervigon.

I decided to use a 40k genestealer body as the base with hormagaunt legs, talons and head to make up the other parts.

So it started out like this:

and this:

Add some cutting and gluing and a couple of paperclips and I've got it this far:

Next steps are probably to cover the wire in green stuff and add the "feet" using the tips of the hormagaunt talons. I'm really not sure about the head though - it just looks too big. Obviously, it's just blu tacked in place now to get a better feel for how it will look but still, it doesn't look quite right. I plan on greenstuffing the carapace and adding a "hood" but I think I might end up using a ripper head - I've just picked up some from forgeworld so that won't be a problem...

So that's it - I haven't scratch built in this scale for pushing 20 years now, and then it was probably adding modelling clay missile racks to rhinos to make whirlwinds, but I fairly pleased with where this is going. C+C gratefully received...

Very good start!

I agree though that a ripper head might be the way to go.
Maybe also angle the front legs more to the front?

Will watch this thread with interest :)

I spent quite a time kitbashing various tyranid bio-vehicles from the 28mm range, and I dragged a couple out of their box to photograph:

I can confirm that using an undersized head gives an imediate sense of large scale so, in the photos above, that's a ripper head on a termagant body and a hormagaunt head on a ravaner body.

Sweet looking stuff.
That is one of the good things about Nids, the 40k models can be kitbashed into larger epic beasties quite nicely.

That's an excellent tip. Will keep that in mind when (if) I finish my nid army!

Also, the Forgeworld rippers are a very good source for small talons and base bodies for trygons, mawlocs etc.

Just a small update to jolly myself along...

I've been working on the spines. I think the outer ones look a little tall which is fine. Easier to chop stuff down than build it up at this point. A bit more work with the knife and maybe some green stuff and I think it will get there.

I think I'll work on the carapace next. C+C welcome.
