In the dim heartless world of the not-so-far future, much of the world has fallen under the sway of madmen and their creations.

A dozen years ago the end was heralded by the release of smart-mud, the first home hackable nano-assembler. Someone had the smart idea of buying the smaller pack, and using it to make more smart-mud...

Now fiendish constructions stalk Europe, while other groups try to salvage what little remains of military technology in self protection. The Medditerrean and the Nord Sea swarm with pirates and arcane warships, the Glass Dragon unfurls her wings across London and Monstrous hybrids scuttle through the Alps.

In the midst of this, the island formerly known as Great Britian has sunk into a dark haze of drones and fens, a nightmare isle known as Blighty

added a bit more to the opening to explain where I'm going with this.

First stop will probably be the Glass Dragon faction.

Sounds really cool,

Anything more about the factions in mind or are you looking for ideas?

Were you imagining a sort of dark matrix-esque future where machines enslave humanity or a terminator-esque future where the machines just want to eradicate humanity? Also what's the global story, is the game centered around Britain or are you flinging it wider to Europe and beyond?

Factions that are currently in:

Alpspawn

Glass Dragons

Mudlarks

Nuth'ners

Polygrims

Gremlins

Gannets

and about 4 others that need fleshing out still.

and a few more I'm fleshing out.

Europe wide area, but probable focus on the UK for detail, the island nature makes it easier to control faction growth.

hah! I'm actually planning on burying myself in the 1990's pulp that came out of the 80's era.

How things have changed.

Edit - on a rules front, how do people feel about chess variants?

I feel the relationship between the humans the machines is best explained by this video (not my work)

The First of the Factions:
Mudlarks

The Mudlarks live a precarious life on shifting sands and island esturies. Masters of salvage and cheerful xenophobia, they patrol the Great Wash on the lookout for tradeable material or hostile raiders.
They are not the only ones who know the tracks through the marsh and sand-bars but they are the only ones to make permanent homes in the area of the Great Wash.

Mudslappers
Manning walls and observation posts, the Mudslappers are the doughty backbone of the Mudlark forces. Equipped with hard-tack rations, flotation pods for their mortar and enough sweet tea, they'll happily pin down an area for weeks. Woe betide anyone fool enough to wander into their sights.

Mudskimmers
Boisterous and disrespectful, the Mudskimmers utilize small and nimble one-man hovercraft to rapidly cross difficult terrain. There's nothing better for a mudskimmer veteran then watching their younger counterparts slice into the side of an enemy convoy in a hail of slugs and lance rockets. When all that is left of the supply chain is booby-trapped smoking wrecks, the skimmers roar off across the mudflats seeking their next victims.

Rattletraps
Close to conventional technology, the rattletraps are often rebuilt from the husks of ruined tanks that the mud disgorges occasionally. Whilst not the most uniform sight, a Rattletrap brigade traditionally carries a company of Mudslappers as riders, some light artillery variants for support and a couple of flak-traps. Their mission is generally to take and hold an area. In the Mudlark's natural environment, the importance of high ground is not metaphorical.

'Bovvercraft
The glory boys of the Mudlark Military the Bovvercraft manage to combine the armour and the damage potential of a battle-tank with the speed and flexibility of a hovercraft. Before promotion to a Bovvercraft unit, a crew-member is expected to have spent time in at least three other branches (or 'streams') of the forces, giving them a healthy respect for their friends in the field and for the concept of combined arms.

Malefant
The Malefant on the other hand, is far from a shining example of technology, their mere presence an embarrassment to more progressive Captains. Descended from escaped experiments, research pieces or even zoo animals the Malefant has adapted to its new environment suspiciously quickly. It has gained webbed toes,an extra set of tusks but lost the great ears of its ancestors. Slow compared to technical solutions, the Malefant is stealthy. Armed with a clever driver and sky hammer mortars it can be an unwelcome surprise to the unwary. The Malefant itself simply chuckles quietly and plods back into the trackless mangroves.

Doombeak
Faced with increasing pressure from Glass Dragon Slaving Bands and heavy losses from their aerial superiority, the Mudlarks have been forced to expand their use of pure smart contam-mud. Fighter aircraft wreckage is pieced back together with a core of glowing waste. Smart mud is plastered on the chassis and engraved with delicate whorls and patterns. Once the engine's heart catch fire, the mud hardens to ceramic and another Doombeak takes to the sky with a screech of triumph.

Pearly Queen
Some Mudlark settlements are on stilts hammered into the higher ground, others are groaning collections of rafts. All pale to the magnificence of the few 'Pearly Queens' – former warships resurrected and with rotor, pontoon or tracks can make their way to anywhere in the Mudlark's territory. Support fire, barracks, workshop and refinery rolled into one, a Pearly Queen is the heart of the fleets critical to the Mudlark's survival.

found this fragment. looks like the cad work, ruleset and other faction writeups didn't make it :(

The Glass Dragon

Emerging after the Breakdown from the center of a ruined London, the Glass Dragon lands are not extensive and they show little interest in further expansion. Armies occasionally march out upon their neighbours, seeking slaves or more exotic prizes. Raids upon the Dragon's lands are frequent and often repulsed with the bare minimum of forces. Twice within living memory a report has reached London of a particular rare treasure. The the Gates of the Dragon open, and all its forces pour forth, ready to march the full length of Blighty for the sake of its desire.

Suits
The Dragon's economy is built upon slavery. Work-teams toil in the fields and workshops while the vast majority pick over the rubbish heaps under watchful eyes. In times of war they are banded together, equipped with rudimentary weapons and left to choke the battlefield. Loyalty is ensured by the collar and ties placed upon them. Rebellious thoughts are choked off, literally, as the fabric tightens. This method of conditioning is so effective that survivors often find themselves promoted, disobedience now being an unthought.

Headhunters
Not all slaves are so compliant, and when a few or even a larger band manage to slip their chains and escape the Headhunters are set loose. Bionically altered with a viper's ability to 'taste' IR, they quickly and silently give chase across the broken landscape. During times of war the Headhunters take sadistic pride in operating behind the lines, ambushing or capturing the enemies of the Dragon.

Managers
The closest the Glass Dragons come to a main battle tank, the Manager class are squat, heavily armoured and designed to survive brutal exchanges of fire. Unusually for Glass Dragon constructs, controllers are not hardwired, experimentation showing the speed of replacement and limited freedom to make repairs increases their overall attrition capability. Slow and murderous, these bolster the line wherever suits of slaves are deemed insufficient.

Accountants
Battlefields are often sources of those rarities the Dragon craves, and it is unacceptable that harvesting should pause due to mere fighting. For this task Accountant class tanks are commonly deployed. Exact toolsets vary according to task, but the Accountant maintains as full a set of weaponry as the Manager class. Sometimes the critical resources are found within the enemy itself and a delicate balance must be struck between damage, destruction and resources expended.

Promoted
The Promoted are recruited from only the most dedicated of the Glass Dragon's vassals. Extensively augmented, they combine the modifications of the Headhunters with inbuilt weapon systems and an advanced flight pack. They are fast, ruthless and energy hungry. When the Dragon goes to war, villages are emptied, outposts deserted and convoys of vehicles are left sitting on the road, their batteries drained, their weapons disabled and their occupants missing. Without witness, there are only rumours of 'an ill wind' and mocking laughter.

Wyvrens
Some of the Promoted pass through 'the breath of the Dragon' becoming over time something less and far more then human. Wyvrens grow steadily heavier and tougher with age, a long tail of twisted cables marking the eldest. Armoured and arrogant, they are used to break enemy lines and spirits.

Director
Conventionally a commander's role is to manage and direct the flow of warfare. Ultimate responsibility for this in the Glass Dragon's hierarchy rests with the Directors. Cross mounted on a chassis twice the size of a mere Manager class, the Director mounts significant defensive weaponry, but is generally dedicated to its supportive role. Data flows from across the battlefield. Visual feeds from constructs, babbled reports from slaves, echoes and vibrations of distant artillery and poorly encrypted radio traffic – all are fed into the Director's master plan.
