looks like makerbots are getting better.

Still would like to get a reprap up and running though. I really doubt SLS will become a home hobby thing in the near future (although 8 years ago I'd have sad that about 3d printing...)

I probably dislike apple more than GW, which is saying something.

Now I really like Apple, but I think it historical. I really felt for them in the 90s when they were doing something different and high quality against the unassailable evil empire that was Microsoft and the hordes of beige boxes. I tend to like the little guy, their comeback has been so big however that they have become the 'establishment', I never saw that coming! I never expected the mentality I had, to support the little guy and be cool by buying what no one else has to make people but windows phones, but it has! I find it very hard to drop a company once I have pinned my colours to its mast though, Apple will have to do something pretty terrible for me to stop supporting them, and since I spend most of my life with an iPad or iPhone in my hand that doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.

Same goes for Games Workshop. I really liked the company, Jake Thorenton, Alessio Cavatore, Rick Priestley, Mike McVey, Guy Haley, Paul Sawyer, Robin Dews were like celebrities to be in my teens and twenties. I got quite cross with some upstart called mantic when they looked like they were stealing from my favourite company (even though I was starting to get worried about where the hedge fund owned GW was heading). Now I've realised half the names I remember form the 90s and early 2000s seem to have worked with mantic and GW have put up their prices again, even my fanboy level support is being stretched. Now I think I WANT to like GW more than I actually like them.

A wee bit off topic but couldn't resist this->
Do not mess with the Mighty Avenging Chaos Army.

3D Printing could help GW.

If the technology develops to the point where it can print GW-quality miniatures quickly, then that avoids the need to maintain inventory: you go to the store, point at the model you want and a redshirt prints it off for you. The cost savings would allow GW to sell at a price that would be competitive with the pirates. If they can improve the community support aspect and keep people in the stores playing games and hanging out, that would make for a viable business model in a world of ubiquitous, high quality 3D printing.

That's a great idea, but GW has a track record of introducing "cost saving" measures and not lowering prices. Unless GW is backed into a corner and has no other choice, I don't expect prices ever to come down.

No company voluntarily gives up revenue, so I also assume that for GW the model I described would be only slightly preferable to liquidation.

All the while that the cost cutting exercise produces other benefits and that people will pay it, they will put their prices up.

Resin was there to be cheaper than increasingly expensive metal, but the quality increase allowed them to up boult drop prices.

Digital edition books save the production costs but give convenience, speed and interactivity so they have used as an opportunity to up prices.

If printing in their shops is more convenient and fast fir the customer than ordering in direct only kit then they WILL put up prices. If its actually a cost drop for them then they will just take it as a windfall (or say its needed to cover the new infrastructure).

the quality increase

"Finecast" is a pretty inferior casting method to metal, by all accounts it's far more error-prone.

The 3d printing is nothing new in terms of it allowing people to copy GW minis. It will still be faster and cheaper to cast them than print them, printing just means that people with no craft skills can do it.

Why pay more? Moral scruples aside: because you won't get anywhere near the quality on a home printer for years. The people on the blogs acting all surprised that home printers are good enough to print GW-like figures have clearly not looked at the pictures. Those are nice minis done with new tech, but not GW quality. To keep people paying aside from that (and aside from DRM and litigation threats) GW would need to become a friendly awesome community player, with a great rep and brand loyalty, be seen as great guys to support … except, the 13 year-olds who make up their target demographic won't care and will pirate indiscriminately given the chance, whereas the older gamers with a better attitude towards supporting a company have already endured too much.

I don't think GW will successfully adapt here, it will just become more litigious. Look at how long they have taken to make a digital codex, and even then it is barely 'interactive', why it does not generate lists is baffling. It will be a long, slow, painful death, the company will become smaller, charge even more for its minis as the core customer base shrinks while licensing its IP out to a wider market.

On the app thing, why even pay that much for the apps? You can just pirate the nintendo DS games or jailbrake the apple iphone. But these are niche activities, the general consumer will still pay.

All very true ... so we shall see what the (near) future brings ...

That assumes no competition - I think it's possible that GW could face a lot more competition in the future, from other companies who are upping their game and producing models of comparable quality, and from pirates who will make stuff that's "good enough" at a much lower price.

Having said that, Apple has succeeded in maintaining its status and market cap despite having plenty of competition in its market, but it's done so by innovating and consistently creating excellent products that justify their cost. It'll be interesting to see if GW can do something similar.

I am baffled as to what I should say. I'm in inclined towards 'pft, Americans' but i have to admit it does look a little awkward now you point it out, even thought i am justified in my Britishness … :-[
