OH hellz I so know that I will not actually make it through this (a 2 year old and one about to drop does not make for a rapid painting situation) but - darn it.

Saturnine 3rd Reclamation Crusade, Defense of Yellow Bay Interdiction Force

Imperial Forces:
16th Air Attack Company, 3rd Regimental Combat Team, Y'psilon Eridanii Majoris

Located close to Holy Terra in Segmentum Solar, the Eridanii are known for their professional, well equipped Guard Regiments that are frequently raised for battle throughout the Imperium. Settled ages ago (according to legend before even the Dark Age of Technology), the system is a well establish hub of industry and Imperial civilization boasting no less than 7 Maximus Alpha level Manufactorums of the Mechanicum. The super-orbital plates produce prodigous numbers of craft for the Imperial Navy, amply supplied from the system's dense asteroid belts and resource rich Ort cloud.

[counts as Airborne Kasrkin]
One IG Commander unit, seven units, and four Valkyries
325 points
==================

Azov Host, 3rd Proserpina Hussars

A recently reborn regiment after the their namesake was expended in a rear guard action in the Fall of Vespita IV, they were hastily raised and mobilized for action in the 3rd crusade, some say too hastily. In hushed voices allied units whisper that the Hussars are unlucky after a void accident cost them a quarter of the regimental strength at the start of the crusade when a formation failure of one of the units bulk carriers caused a collision and the deaths of thousands of the Emperor's soldiers. Investigations point to inattention to standard operating procedure for high orbit formation due to lack of training. Colonel Grastagg and his entire command staff were summarily executed for Failure of Duty and direct command has been given to Commisar Ulkik.

[counts as Cadian Whiteshield Company]
One Imperial Guard Commander unit, twelve Imperial Guard units
200 points
+ Artillery Battery Three Basilisks
250 points
+
Flak Battery Three Hydras 150

==================
Tacticus Century, 965th Armored Regiment

Masters of combined arms warfare, the T'tenba Merkava Armoured regiments are held in the same regard as Minervan Tank Legions and the Tallarn Desert Raiders. When an enemy requires destruction by the application of precise force, army group generals are thankful for the presence of a famed Merkava regiment. Overall command of the motely detachment was given to General Ven-Yurian

[counts as Cadian Regimental Headquarters]
One Imperial Guard Supreme Commander unit, seven storm-trooper units, and a Leviathan Mobile Command Center

[counts as Armored Fist Platoon]
Ten IG infantry units and five Chimaeras 300 Points
+ 3 Stormlords 600
+ 3 Crassus Armored Transports (alt models)

[counts as Cadian Infantry Company]
One Imperial Guard Commander unit, twelve Imperial Guard units 250 points
+
Flak Battery Three Hydras 150
+
heavy support 200

4th Eridanii Carrier Support Group Aerospace wing elements
Two Thunderbolt Fighters 150 points
One Marauder Heavy Bomber 150 points

4th Eridanii Carrier Support Group
6 Firestorm Class Frigates (22nd Interdiction Squadron, The Headhunters)
3 Sword Class Frigates (73rd Picket Lance)
2 Mars class battlecruisers (His Will and Victorious)
2 Lunar class cruisers (Indomitable and Glory of Terra)

So first of all I wanted to go less for a competition army as opposed to one with a detailed theme and backstory (one that will get fleshed out as we proceed). Representing a small attack group gathered from disparate units put together for a particular mission from available forces.

The overall theme is summed up as : You don't go to war with the army you dream of but the army you have.

One of the key features will be 3 VERY different units with very different backgrounds that should look and act very differently. This means different models, color schemes, and unit types will be painted up. A secondary objective will be to allow me to continue growing each group into a full fledged army itself over time. For instance of the 16th Air Attack Company above will be grown into an Elysian or Warhawk list based force. Counter that with the Merkava Armoured Regiment which will have some type of Tallarn or Minervan feel eventually. I'll probably grow the Hussars into a Chem Dogs variant over time.

Side by side with this will be a large amount of BFG to go along with this group (representing a small part of Battlefleet Solar secundened to the Crusade) for invasion and aerospace superiority purposes.

I'm hoping the high degree of paint variation and even EA vs BFG will keep me from getting bored and motivated well into resurecting this ToEG in time for the 2013 challenge when I invariably fail to complete it the first time! :D

OK onto actual models now. Starting a day late as I had to focus on moving the mum; It's not every day someone retires and moves across the country to live at the end of the block to be my part time kid wrangler. Anyways...

Let's start with the Leviathan Mobile Command Center. The original model is long OOP and frankly it looked as retarded as all hell so I'm going with a Sovereign Class Land Ship as the basis.

I've color adjusted it for better detail relief on the resin and placed a current wendy rhino next to the other weapons options for scale (will be cross posting that to the appropriate proxy list later).

In order to fit in better with fluff and the stats I'll need to modify this guy in two basic places. I'm going to need to craft a Doomsday Cannon for the front and replace the dome most likely with some type of largish turret (about the size of an American Nickel). For the cannon I went for an Exodus Wars Guild Cyclops Heavy Mortar Turret. It's the right size and doesn't have the afore mentioned developmental issues of a "huuuge frikin gunnn" syndrome too much stuff some Grandma Wendy currently suffers from.

If anyone has EW turrets they'd like to give some sizing pics for that they think would work it'd be greatly appreciated. Failing input I'll probably just make a few "stab in the dark" purchases to see what works.

Theses are shown next to one of my many ancient stands of incomplete marine armies from 2nd edition plastic Marine Legion boxes (recently starting the restanding to new 40mm long bases, Super Jet DeSolv rocks). As I understand it the current casts have been resized closer to 8mm, no? So something to keep in mind in the comparison shots. Regardless these are really nice items and a great deal.

OK so finally did get to start to painting but got sidetracked to the orbital forces instead of the guard units per say. :{[]
I sat down and those damn Firestorms that have been laying there in the work bench for 3 years now were just taunting me. i finally had enough and just went for it. I figure getting them "done" after all this time will give me the clear conscience to focus on the IG from here on out (since BFG is actually my core gaming item-EA until recently was for painting fun).

There's still some small details to add on and it needs some OSL for the engines but it's enough to put on a table and feel good about for now.

and yes there is forward movement, albeit slow, towards the air attack company-there's a few hiding in cover in the upper right methinks :o

First Month Down.

Well pretty much what i expected. I get about an hour a week to put into this at this point in life so me getting about 5ish is a mighty thing.

units in progress:

6 stands of Eridanii Air Assault Troops
Require "devlan mudding" and basing. Cyclops proxies arrived so can finally do the command stand.

4 Firestorm frigate Eridanii Fleet assets.
Still require some OSL on the engines.

2 Thunderbolt fighters.
Base coated and moving onto highlighting and detail work (waiting on my new shipment white and heavy brown paint from Vallejo as I'm out)
Image

Points started:
160 points of BFG
475 points of Epic

Units completed: 0

OK folks I need some community input. I've known from the start that I wanted to use squadron colors on the Thunderbolt flight and while I am in a holding pattern waiting on a shipments of paints I should tackle some of this. Instead of the common style of either just the wing tips and/or a tail "ring" that seems to be so common I wanted to try something a little more bold and a tab bit different so I am thinking of the painting the leading edges of the airfoil on the wings and tail. I've craptastically mocked up a blue or red variation for example (WARNING: I am not a photoshopper :)).

ImageImage

So folks, which looks better in your opinion?

Ummm ... Yeah. Did I happen to say I suck at Photoshop? :D
a bit closer to what I am intending (think mentally Mechrite red base with edge highlights of blood red)
Image

I am leaning more towards blue at the moment (Imperial blue base, blend in Ultra Marine Blue, Ice Blue extreme - all VGC)

Edit: Anyone else disturbed by the apparent lack of quality control on Father Wendy products? Far too much hot water+blending and/or gap filling than I should have to do on these. Enough to (almost) set you off of them forever.

Not perturbed by the warping - 1mm resin is as easy to fix as it is to warp in the first place. Shipping containers get hot, and sustained pressure at 120deg will bend the resin. You should see the top plate on the Arkurion pattern Stormsword I have in 28mm; that's a pain to bend back.

Haven't had to do any major gap filling yet; just very minor stuff around the junction between nose and fuselage.

I also prefer blue.

OK well figured I need something to actually fight over so I decided to build up some objectives. Based on another thread I was inspired to bust out an old xmarx radar station I've had sitting in a box for years and paint her up. I went for an old weather beaten piece of machinery, dusty and rusted from years exposed to the elements, half forgotten until war makes securing her a vital asset.

A quick primer of Army Painter Uniform grey, a heavy wash of sepia, and then followed up with rust effects from various mixtures of Bestial Brown and Golden Yellow stippled on and then the left over paint heavily watered down and then painted into various parts. Oh and of course, hazard stripes , appropriately distressed of course, cause I can't avoid them :)

Think she came out all right for a days work. Not really part of my formation points allotment but this still counts towards ToEG, right? ;) At least I can hold my head up and say that I actually completed something...heh
