By that time I hope to have my own gaming/workroom (I'm working in the garage now) with a rather large lock on it, to escape the madness.

I know what you mean, even though I only have 2 offspring: a 3 year old tank, er, I mean boy and a 5 year old girl.

And Chris, when they are 15 to 19 they start to tell me that my generation doesn't understand a thing...  :blues:

Amazing.

My 486 PC (circa 166 Mhz), w/ 24 (previously 4 then 8) MB Ram and 800 and (newly added) 2.1 HDD's works for like 9 years now and only recently did it begin to behave annoyingly.

And even though on the horizon ther is a possibility of a new one looming, I won't get rid of the "Old Reliable", ever!

Wow, I can't believe some of you have been able to run those old PCs as long as you have. I am a laptop fanatic and my last three PCs have been laptops. I hate sitting at a desk. . . Anyway, no matter the model, I am accepting the fact that a laptop is only REALLY good for about two years. I use them so much that they just wear out quick. The laptop I have now gets so hot when I am running a lot things that it is too hot to put on my lap! No bullshit, I actually sweat sometimes using it. I swear!

I'm tempted to build my own PC, but I have a desk top too and it never gets turned on. I actually only took it to install Windows 98 in order to play Dark Omen! The freakin thing is so loud it scares the children in my apartment complex.

The tough thing for me is that I can't swap out video and graphics cards in the laptops, so that means I probably won't be able to handle the resources needed for DOOM 3 and HALO 2, or even HALF LIFE 2.  :( :( :(  I guess I'll have to get a new laptop. . . I don't think the Xbox versions will do them justice. . .

Last year was a great year for movies. 2004 is going to be awesome for PC games. Cannot wait for DOOM.

Yeah, I had a custom built P2 400 with 128 mb ram, an 8 gb hd, and a Voodoo2 card.  Thing cost me $1800 back in 1998.
Two years ago I built my first, an Athlon 1900Xp with 512 Mb Ram, a 20 Gb hd, and a Geforce2 Pro card in it.  That one only cost $1600.  This year, I retired the P2 (I had em networked) and built an Athlon 2500Xp with 512 ram, an 80gb hd, and a radeon 9700 Pro video card.  I guess you could say that I am seriously crazy, since I have spent upwards of $5000 on computers since 1998, mostly just to play games. :D   But hey, computer gaming is an addiction just like Epic !  I guess I'm just doomed....doomed...doomed to playing with my games and my minis!!

Hi!

I was very tempted to get into the "overclocking scene". Was planning on getting watercoolers for the CPU, chipset and video card, I did the "wire trick" to unlock my CPU and got an extra 200 mhz without appreciable jump in core tempertures. But realized that I'd need better power supply, better RAM, and when I saw the cost of it all, decided I'd stick with epic.....

Hm? You'd probably get a supercomputer with the price of a "primarchload"... :p

True, most of the time it's good to stay with epic. But sometimes I need a dose of Serious Sam (when I'm having a bad day), SPWAW or Combat mission...  :;):

I must say I was also tempted to overclock my old PC slightly, but I was too much unsure whether I will make it work better or just screw it up beyond repair.

Now I'm looking for a 4 to 8 MB graphics card.

I must say I'm amazed with the new HDD, as far as it goes - my hard drive space has more then tripled!

On the old one I was quickly running outta space when I started to interest in Epic... 60+ MB of content of 800 MB hard drive...

Hi!

TFH, you should get a 20Gig hard drive they are dirt cheap and it will give loads of space. Heck get a 40gig one, I have seen them for 70 bucks or so.

Beyond that I dont think an epic gamer needs much more.... :;):

I am typing this on a Dual 2GHz G5 with a Gb of RAM and a 250 Gb HDD.

It's rather fast...

:)

One of my favourite computers was a Toshiba Libretto (a laptop the size of a video cassette), it had a 6" TFT screen, a P75 chip and a 800Mb HDD. The only problem was battery life which was less than 2 hours. My current VAIO laptop has an extended battery which with the original gives me nearly 10 hours!

I saw those and almost got one. In the end I went for a Sharp palmtop instead. That semi-died when the touchscreen went and now I dont breathe without my Sony Clie NX70V - I even use it for some of the pictures and it is fantastic for recording battle reports with a 640x480 camera and a voice recorder!

Well, Primarch, not possible when my file system is FAT 16. I'm happy with what I have, and that's about what I need for some time. I don't think any HDD of over 10 GB would work in my PC anyway.
Whwn I bought the "new" one, it was about in the cost limit I wanted it to be... I had not found HDD's in size range of 5-10 GB around here, and the few 3-5 GB ones I found were ridiculously expensive.

Now I'm happy that I can install some games that require big HDD space. Might & Magic VI, X-Com Apocalypse (I'll have to re-install, the game ceased to run right way), Warhammer Shadow of the Horned Rat. Big stuff. And when I'm done with them, I'll install the Fallout 2 on full installation size. No more 15 minutes waiting until PC loads another location from the CD drive.

When I have a new PC, I'm sure to get the meanest, biggest, fastest HDD I can find installed in there. 200 or 250 Gigabytes.

Mine has 120Gig which should be bucketloads.  I dont play PC games, butdo do a lot of digital phoography.  We took someting like 7000 photos in the 2 years we lived in the UK and did a helluva lot of touring, and never went close to choking to 30Gig drive on my old machine.

Hi!

FAT 16? Well, that certainly cant handle hard drives bigger than 20 (or even less).

Jimbo, thats one sweet machine you got there!
