Couple of things I've always played but lately have been uncertain of.

1) Units lost to combat resolution in assault, is there a range limit on who can die? I've always played no, a scout screen 120cm long can and will be wiped out by a clipping assault (there is no limit to range on kills from BMs from shooting at broken formations). However, the rules for hackdowns say that they are applied in the same manner as hits in the assault itself, and those are limited to units within 15cm of an attacking unit. Is a unit safe from 'kill' (it represents routed units too) if it's not directly involved in the assault?

2) If one side in an assault has both war engines and non-WEs, can the opponent choose to allocate hits to either WEs or non-WEs, like they can with shooting? Or are hits allocated like normal, with the defender choosing if two units are equally close (like in b2b)? This came up when a Dominatrix, a Hierodule and 4 hormagaunts assaulted a Warlock Titan.

Unlimited range.
1st to die are the clostest, as usual.

No. The defender allocate hits.

I think I can answer the second question correctly...

Hit allocation, whether it be in shooting or assault, are allocated ' normal' hits first (front to back, b2b counting as the nearest), followed by ANOTHER ROUND of MW hits (same caveat). I'm pretty sure that, like shooting, TK hits can be specifically targeted against WE'S.
As such in the example above yr opponent could ' soak up' some normal hits with his smaller bugs before allocating any remaining to bigger one's. Ater which tk hit's can be allocated specifically to we's but yr opponent, in this example, could soak them up with a heirodule.

MoK: TK hits cannot be specifically allocated to WE; they are allocated as part of the MW round of allocation by the defender.

What I thought, but I can't find anything either way in the rule for the first one. The second one is clear, but appeared a bit unfair for the warlock when the dominatrix ate the normal hits on 4+ RA and the hormagaunts ate the TK hits.

In both shooting and in assault?

Not exactly; when shooting the attacker must declare which shots are being fired at WEs before they are fired, regardless of TK or otherwise.

What I thought, but I can't find anything either way in the rule for the first one.

It's in the FAQs:
Quote:
Q: In section 1.12.8 it states “In addition, the losing formation suffers a number of extra hits equal to the difference between the two sides' results score.” Do these hits apply to only those units that were within 15cm of an enemy or are they applied to any unit in the losing formation?
A: The hits are applied to any unit in the losing formation and not just those that were within 15cm of an enemy. Assume that the units within 15cms get hacked down and those further away dissolve into a panic stricken rout.

Hmm, I looked in the FAQ, but it looks like I got an outdated one on my Kindle. Thanks for the reference!

edit: No, it's there. I'm just blind apparently :-[
