My gaming group have been playing Epic using the Minigeddon rules as specified by Epic Armageddon London.

We have reached a point where we're now finishing games in an evening and looking to scale up the armies sizes, but a conflict has arisen about the rules that we should play. One camp suggests keeping Minigeddon rules and omitting the 1000pt army restriction, the other objects saying that if we're >1000pt then we should be playing standard Epic Armageddon rules.

The issue we really have is due to the Minigeddon restriction on freebies (no Warlord for Orks, no Avatar for Eldar). It appears that the freebie restriction is fair for 1000pt armies, but give the the Orks and Eldar a disadvantage with larger armies.
Not surprisingly, our issue is between the Ork and Eldar gamers who want to switch to the standard Epic Armageddon rules and the Space Marine gamers who want to stick to the Minigeddon rules.

I can understand the rationale behind restricting the freebies, but the 1000pt point limit in Minigeddon appears pretty arbitrary to me.

My questions,
Are we silly for wanting to scale up Minigeddon?
At what army size can we introduce the Warlords and Avatars while still keeping things fair?
How do you decide/agree on what should be permitted based on army size?

- MSS

Hi MSS

I own and maintain that link you got there - thanks for using it and am glad you found it interesting enough.
In my group we either play minigeddon at 1k or jump straight to 3k. I don't think there's much point in scaling the game up between these 2 poles, for instance you can play at 2k and include the freebies and play on a 6'x4' map w/ standard rules but then I'd argue you can just go to 3k and be done w/ it.
In summary:
Minigeddon fine for 1k or 1.5k and not using freebies, perhaps adding an extra foot to the width of the table.
Anything above I suggest using 3k or more and skipping for instance 2k and then play normal rules.

Lists should be balanced between 2K and 5K so once you hit that level play the normal game.

Minigeddon is fun though...

Hello MrShinySpear!

Like those above, I would tend to cut the line at 2k.

@Carlos, thanks for your resources. We like playing Minigeddon.

@Mephiston You say "Lists should be balanced between 2K and 5K", is this documented somewhere or is it just considered group consensus learned after playing many games?

Thanks all of you for your replies, it certainly clears a lot up. Although, it would have been nicer if you'd given me my Avatar at 1500pt instead :).

I believe it's mentioned in the section on the Grand Tournament Scenario

Both players pick armies to an agreed points total between 2,000
to 5,000 points using the tournament army lists. It is possible to
play games using the tournament rules for larger or smaller games
than this, but please note that the army lists have been balanced
assuming that armies will fall within this range, and this means
that larger or smaller games may be slightly unbalanced
