Hi!

Dont you just feel the love for GW, I think only Microsoft generates such equal "good feelings".  }:)

The difference being that I (for instance) don't use MS products at my home unless required to by a client or job.

My machine doesn't have an MS OS and doesn't use any MS apps.

Yet people still play GW games, use GW figs, buy new GW products and still complain rather loudly about the company.

Odd really. That whole "love/hate" thing.

Frankly I don't really mind the company nor how they run their business and if it ever got to the point where I did I'd just stop buying their products and move on.

It almost seems like complaining about GW is more of a hobby for some people than the games :-)

Hi!

The chagrin mostly comes from the comparison of GW's business techniques from, say 10 years ago, compared to now. I retailed when GW was up and coming and left retailing a year before they dumped the US distribution chains and went direct. I definitely pity those retailers who have to deal with them nowadays. I can see why more stores choose to drop their line, they can be very difficult to deal with.

I dont mind or begrudge their right to profit. They are a corporation and they have a duty to their stockholders. My beef's with GW all have to do with how badly they handled epic40k, killed epic as a core game and to this day STILL refuse to admit that they, not the fans, has brought epic to its current state.

Epic will continue, in some shape or form, but there are those of us that remember when epic was a core game, releases were plentiful and players easy to find.

So, I guess at the core, my bemoanings are just really nostalgia of what once was and is no more and that I REALLY wish GW would give the game the resources it deserves.

I wasn't really involved in GW games for the better part of seven or eight years (for a long series of reasons) so I really did miss all the drama.

Especially the whole Epic40K release.

Hi!

Consider yourself lucky!  :)

In fact I think those not around for the "great epic schism of 97" have an advantage over us who were.

You can enjoy epic with less bias, comparisons and baggage!  :D

It's by far a better experience to play epic nowadays, knowing only the good game being released now and not "old figure x" that doesn't have rules, or why did they "insert old unit here" dumped, changed or isnt as effective as it used to be.

That's why I think all newbies to epic should pick up Epic A, play it and enjoy it and not worry about the "past".

The "past" is what 'ol farts like me are for...... :;):

Personally, I don't hate GW. They choose to charge relatively high prices for their products and I choose to buy their stuff elsewhere. Fair's fair :). Anyway, without them a whole series of great games wouldn't have been released

As for Epic40K, look on the bright side. It meant lots of cheap and well sculpted epic minis went on sale cheaply if you were buying secondhand!

It was that sale which got me back into GW games...

I spent loads of money that half-price week.

You and me both!

Those were the largest purchases I have ever made to GW direct. I got tons of griffons, leman russ, bombards and even gargants for 2 bucks, 3 bucks and in case of the gargants 5 bucks for the box!

Those were the days......

This is true but compare them to competing 6mm Sci Fi figure lines.

You pay more but the figures are much better.

Hi!

Problem is there are NO real competing lines. No one else makes plastic 6mm sprues for sci-fi. So there's no real comarison in regards to that.

In regards to metal, only a handful of companies even make 6mm. Ground zero games makes some for their Dirstide game. I use them as proxies and their quaility I'd say is pretty good. Alternative armies makes some 6mm stuff Maksim showed some pictures of and they looked very good too. Monday knight productions carries the MAATAC line of vehicles which I think are very good as well. All pretty cheap for good quality.

This is not mentioning games like CAV, Battletech or Ogre that have models that could be used as epic proxies and are of very good quaility. Gw used to have undisputed dominance in the "quaility" department, but alternatives have also raised theirs enough to compare favorably.

Its also true however, that the cost of the alternative lines has gone up. So the actual ratio of cost versus quality are IMO all very similar.

Gw's epic has the still uncontested edge in having a very large and varied selection of 6mm miniatures (or will have once the releases kick in...). From infantry to titans. No one else can come close in this department and herein lies their forte. Lots of other companies make good vehicle proxies, but very few make good infantry ones and less so specialty vehicles that could compare to titans. Only GW has a little bit of everything.

What is perhaps interesting is that no other company has decided to "tap" the 6mm market, especially after epic 40k hit rockbottom. Its STILL, even with all of epic's ups and downs, GW's market to exploit.

I hope they do put 6mm sci-fi gaming back on the map....and the tabletop.

About the love/hate thing, it's not at all strange. I love the game setting. I hate the attitude. And, I must admit, the prices. While the quality of the minis IS good it's not so good as to warrant outrageous prices. Fortunately, I have a large stock so I don't have to buy anything in order to play.

As for the attitude, I would think _nobody_ liked the "We are the only one there is. There are no others worth noting. We know everything best. This is OUR hobby." line. At least I don't. But I must also point out that IMO the specialist games have a markedly different streak from the "mainstream GW" in the attitude respect, which is good.

And then there are the marketing tactics Primarch already mentioned.

Thanks Jackhammer, an oft overlooked fact.  Without them in the firstplace we wouldn't have and enjoy...

...Epic...

...its too horrible to contemplate!  :oo

I've never run into it so I really couldn't say.

I've seen it, not recently though. I think Confrontation & War Machine knocked a few store people off their high horses.

So true Serps. Conversing woth some friends in the US, these two games are making good headway in some regions and its most GW fans who are jumping in to play those games.

Competition is a alive and well.
