Hello All

I would like some clarification on the upgrading of transports for an infantry division that takes the transport option.

The example is Devistator.
The base of a Devastator squad is:

4 x Devastator units
2 x Rhinos.

Amongst the options we read:-
-----------------------------
Add up to 4 land raiders at 75 points each.

If we were to Add 1 landraider for 75 points are we in fact upgrading a rhino or how does it work?

Do we end up with a Devastator formation having 2 rhinos and 1 land raider or 1 rhino and 1 landraider?

Clarification would be appreciated, and pointers to the neccesary paragraphs if possible so I can substantiate the ruling.

1) Buy the formation
2) Buy upgrades
3) Receive free rhinos to transport whatever isn't transported by upgrades

The others are correct.

It's not something you directly asked but a good, commonly used, trick is to buy the formation a single Razorback. The Devestator formation still gets the two Rhinos as the Razorback can't carry both stands. The Razorback adds good firepower but if it is killed the formation is not slowed down, which can be a problem if a Rhino dies.

Indeed, where you can buy both LR and Razorback upgrades (as for the Devs here, you get LRs first and RBs second and Rhinos for any remaining infantry. The point is you are not generally allowed to buy excess transport, so you cannot buy three RBs and *then* buy the LR.

But what if you are getting support Land Raiders, not as transport?

Short answer is you can't. If you elect to add Land Raiders to a marine infantry unit they will use their transport capacity. It's a balance thing as increasing the number of units in a formation is a real boost to Marines with the ATSKNF rule.
