I have been looking through the various IG armies out there, and none of them really grab me. In addition, I wanted to use a number of non-core miniatures, and in particular the EW bikes. So, I have - on and off - been working on a new IG regiment list for EA. I am putting it up here as I am pretty sure that it wont be NetEA approved, and that is not really the point, since it has a number of new units and uses non-GW miniatures. But, at the same time, I would like to see it balanced for home play.

So, here is the Obsidian Guard army list for Epic Armageddon. Please let me know what you think. Any comments are welcomed, as well as thoughts on balance, play, tactics and general opinions on it.

I came close to specifying a different pattern of Reaver and/or Warhound for the list, but with miniatures at a premium right now, I am not sure what the 'best' armament would be.

Thanks.

I like the list concept; a sort of Imperial Pattern Kult of Speed. The concept is compelling enough to make it tempting to try out... and there are some neat rules/toys on the SHTs.

One question: does its balance vary significantly with the amount of terrain on the board?

Honestly, right now I am not so sure how this list performs. This is the first draft of the list - something to put together to let me start building and painting to get a few games in. Its a concept that I really like and will stick with. I imagine that the list would favour reasonable terrain to stop the units getting blown apart on the run to firefight, which is all that the basic units can do, but that it would swing balance too far in either direction as the support units (Leman Russ, SHTs, etc) are unchanged and it would be too easy to over-extend use of the basic bike formation and get them jumped on by the enemy.

I think that it will perform differently to the KoS list because even the Ork bikes have (very short ranged) heavy weapons, and trucks with infantry. This list suffers from a lack of heavy weapons. Not only do the basic units not have the 50% heavy weapons of standard IG, but they also dont have the legions of Chimera in support. You can add Support Buggies but this gets expensive and they would become targets fast as they can be hit by any weapon type as light vehicles.

The SHTs were my opportunity to have a little fun, and try to cover enough basic types to allow me to pick up a number of different miniatures from a variety of ranges and still make them fit. I am generally happy with the aim of the three types. That said, they are probably my biggest concern in terms of balance and will need some input and testing before I settle on the points for them (and I would like to keep the theme of each type unchanged as much as possible).

Thanks.

part of me twitched a bit at the 'we make our own super heavies and the Ad-mech is cool with that'

then I wondered if the Ad-mech is monitoring their battlefield performance.
Anything successful must be Omnissiah inspired and based from an STC fragment. Cue Ad-mech invasion to 'safeguard' this knowledge.
Failure indicates a heretek, who shall be purged.

Also, not sure how well bikes actually function in a hive. In something like the suburbs, coupled with AT rokkits, I could see them being a powerful unit.

Hi. The SHTs are not 'made to order' or even made by the Obsidian Guard. The AdMech dont send them SHTs, therefore they utilise any SHTs produced by the factory world for the AdMech. It is just that the Obsidian factory world produces these three SHT variants for the AdMech, but still from AdMech STC design. Since they are the only factory world to produce these SHT variants, the AdMech is unsure about investigating further as it may close production, which is unacceptible.

I can certainly see some sections of a Hive being totally off-limits to bikes, but the larger ground levels would be a good place, I would guess. Still, this could probably be clarified in the background.

Thanks for your comments.

Or, profits are down, and the AdMech's lawyers charge by the hour.

:P

I would have thought that the AdMech would always rather shut down a production line rather than allow non-STC factories to continue to operate, as they're religious fanatics rather than practical strategists.

I dont think that I am being clear... The three SHT variants are STC designs being produced by the AdMech at this single factory for distibution across the Imperial lines. The AdMech are not supplying the Obsidian Guard with SHTs, but they are getting these tanks 'direct'.

Anyway, the background is supporting the list in this case, so I am happy to adjust it to fit the force.

I thought all regiments got their tanks direct, at least at their inital founding.

resupply and upgrades later are at the Adeptus Munitorium's discretion, although the Admech supplies to them.

i think. feel free to correct me.

The Imperium is vast, and inefficient.

Some regiments will only be issued vehicles and equipment once during their existence, and will have to beg, borrow, and steal replacements whilst on campaign.

Other regiments, perhaps through a quirk of fate such as having their ID code begin with AAAAAA0001, will recieve regular reinforcements and resupplies, perhaps more than they can use in practice!

Is there a wing of the Inquisition focused on the Cyber-criminals who can rejigger an ID code?

:-).

Reminds me of 597th Vahallans in the Commissar Cain books. The regiment was a merge of 2 other reg's. A Male and Female one oddly enough. But nobody told the Adeptus Munitorium so both regiments kept getting new recruits and supplies. Keeping them well stocked on all accounts. More Cannon Fodder between him and the enemy! :D
