Ok, so it looks like there could be a tournament in Sweden this spring. So I was looking at the stuff I have, which is mostly old 2ed stuff. It seems the only army that I have that would be usable in the new rules is my Guard. So I came up with this list. Im trying to make use of the fact that I have a lot of infantry. And I think epic should be all about masses of cheap infantry! All comments are welcome... Do I need more hydras? Can I do without artillery?

Cheers/Parzval

3000 pts of Guard

Infantry co + Ogryns (commissar) 300
Infantry co (commissar) 250
Infantry co (commissar) 250

Baneblade co + hydra (commissar) 550
Tank co + hydra (commissar) 700

Rough riders 150
Rough riders 150

Reaver Titan 650

I personally would drop one infantry company for an artillery battery, but it could work as is. It all depends on what you are facing. You might have to protect the Rough Riders for grabbing objectives in Turn 3.

I like the fact that the Reaver isn't BTS, you can be aggressive with it then.

Good point.

BTW if I get one commissar for every 500 points in the army, does that include or exclude the titan points?

DS: could you elaborate on the thing about the Rough Riders, Im not sure I understand what you meant by that?

Includes, you get one commisar per 500 points. What you chose to use those points for is up to you...just don't go putting one in the titan

Sure. Given that your infantry companies aren't mechanized, you might be a lacking a little in speedy formations to take objectives, particularly Blitzkrieg, on the opponents side of the table.

I really suggest having that Regimental HQ in there. I've seen many armies go awry as they lack that re-roll. Even more so when the BMs start piling up.

Another good point. I almost never play IG without a Supreme Commander.

The answer to the question of whether it can be good is "yes".  However, that list isn't remotely infantry heavy.  Even counting the Rough Riders it's only ~1/3 infantry.

Also, it's bordering on criminal for IG infantry companies to not take Fire Support.  Not only do they more than double the firepower for only +40% cost, but because you can suppress the cheap core units the formation maintains a lot more of that fire when taking BMs.

Yeah I thought about the fire support thing... I might actually add some of those.

Nice to see someone advocating even more infantry  :agree:  If I can get enough painted, Id love to try one more infantry company, or adding extra platoons to the existing ones!

The regiment HQ however will probably not be an option for me, as I just dont have any chimeras. And as I use only SM-era models, itll be difficult to get hold of any (mk1 chimeras anyone?) I guess I could use Gorgons as stand-ins, but I dont know if I like that option much...

More infantry.  More Infantry!  MORE INFANTRY!!! :oo:

Seriously, one of the guys around here that plays IG does quite a bit of infantry in most games.

Reg HQ + Fire Support
Infantry w/ Fire Support
Infantry w/ Fire Support
SHT company w/ Fire Support and Hydra (BTS)
Stormtroopers in Valks
Stormtroopers in Valks
Tbolts
Tbolts

By formation costs it's more than 2/3 infantry.  Even if you back the transport costs out of the infantry formations, that's still over half points purely on infantry units.

It's only 8 activations and slow, but puts crazy amount of fire downrange and is surprisingly hard when there's cover available.  He normally uses the Stormtrooper formations as a team for mutual support and to concentrate forces when the slower elements cannot.

Fire Support with the SHTs sounds weird, but the tanks won't outrun them and the infantry can usually hide behind the WEs until close enough to the enemy that they want to pop out and shoot.  I wouldn't have believed it, but it works pretty well.  It even works well with Baneblades because the range of the infantry lines up with where the Baneblade wants to be on the battlefield.

That SHT/support combo is surprising. Me and General_Ng tried it a fair bit way back when and could never get it to work. The infantry were either picked off by artillary or hit by assaults, in both cases weakening the core SHT's firepower/chances.
Hell i'd prefer to remove them and the lone hydra and field a hydra battery (not enough flak I tell you!) as with the selective WE targeting rules their Hydra get peeled off quite fast.

Hmm...

Now that you mention it, I think most of the games where I saw it work were against orks or FF-oriented Eldar.  I could see how arty or fast CC troops could be quite effective.

Pardon the necromancy, but if anyone else reads this... where'd this commissar per 500 points rule come from?
