And every raid I ever was involved with was "daring!"

which is my point

involvement will affect language used

I suspect the people at the receiving end of the raid did not think it was "daring" more likely thought it as violent, aggressive, even unprovoked!

Hi all,
this is a rare incursion for me - I never feel very much at ease discussing war  (and then I have to go and choose wargaming for a hobby...).
I will not present any arguments of my own, will even refrain from quoting, and will just suggest some reading matter which best sums up what I believe (and they're even good fun!):
1 - Any ABC Warriors comic ('The Black Hole' is best, if perhaps not the one closest to my views)
2 - Any Discworld novel, by Terry Pratchett - but, very much in particular (and to the point), 'Monstrous Regiment'
3 - 'The Hunting of the Snark', by Lewis Carroll (my book of instructions for life) - can be found
here.

cheers from a lazy enginseer :;):

You got that correct Jimbo, a Raid by definition uses surprise as a key element for success and to paraphrase one of our manuals, is a "violent and aggressive action." It's supposed to be.

In the heat of battle, infantrymen have to use surprise and violent and aggresive action to successfully complete their mission, reduce friendly casualties and maximize enemy casualties. That's what Grunts get paid to do. ?

As far as unprovoked, if you're in the wrong uniform, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, you are a target. Believe me, I know!

I had two tours on the DMZ in the ROK and three deployments in the CZ in Central America, among others... War is a very nasty business. But at least we follow the Geneva Convention, many of our enemies don't. It's a messy affair...

Somebody at the receving end may feel an attack is unprovoked, however that does not mean it is.

One of the difficulties the British Army faced in Northern Ireland when fighting the IRA were the rules of engagement.

If a terrorist was running towards you with a weapon you could open fire.

If the terrorist was running away from you with a weapon and you opened fire you could be prosecuted!

War is a very nasty business.

you can say that again

Rules of Engagement can become very cloudy, very quickly...

And all should be glad that they never have to live through an Omaha Beach, Pork Chop or Hamburger Hill, Mogadishu, etc., etc. It's directed madness and controlled chaos... and man has been doing it for longer than we'll ever know...
