As is is fine IMO, even if people are directed from here from elsewhere that's only good for the site and IMO most people would still vote for what they personally think the best models.

Alternatively, we could ask the OSCE to send someone over for election monitoring.

Now that is a good idea. They even watched the electtion in Germany this September.

I'd like to put forward that anonymous entry really does nothing to prevent solicitation of votes because the submitter will always recognize his image and simply solicit votes for the correct entry.

While anonymity can be breached by posting on other sites, it's still a good filter for reducing bias.  Not everyone is going to visit or create off-site material shilling for the win and the intent behind having anonymous entries is solid.

Besides, isn't lobbying for your own GothiComp/EpiComp entry a bit pathetic?  I think Competitive Earwax Sculpting is possibly a bit less niche and probably has more glory attached to it.

Keeping the prizes under wraps might be a good way to reduce any extraordinary effort to stuff the Comp ballot box and it is all just for fun right?! :)

Does anyone really think there is serious bias based on popularity or lobbying?  I have not heard anyone assert there is or even raise the possibility until now.

This seems to be all "what if," so I'd say don't worry about it until "if" comes to pass.

I'd doubt that the bias is "serious" given the nature of the Comp, but everyone is impacted by familiarity.

For example, given three equal choices of questionable yellow beer, most people reach for the one that says "Bud".

Not in Europe! We got plenty of beers of questionable quality to start drinking unnecessarily expensive questionable imported american beer    :p
