Could someone explain to me why anyone would take the
Ulthiwe heavyweapon squad instead of 2x Bright lance?

only thing worse for the brightlances are their CAF
they have BP of 2 with 3 units / detachment vs BP 2 with 4 units, they are worth 1 VP each
which means they are more durable units
the 2 BL detachments will put out 6x 4+ -2 shots and each killed stand will only remove 1 shot
vs tge heavy weapons squad which hav 8x 5+ -1 shots, loosing 2 shots per stand and after 2 kills they will break
(the 2x BL will need 4 killed to give the same amount of VP)
I know its to late for gold (isnt it?)
but perhaps remaking the heavyweapons squad and making it unique (or 1 per ulthiwe host) would be in order
I'd go with something like this
6 stands of 2x 5+ -2  or 4x 5+ -1
kinda like either a starcannon or a scatterlaser

There seems to be an error somewhere.

2 possibilities :

1)Ulthwe Heavy Infantry specific profile is missing from stats table and should get a boost from standard heavy infantry (but not that much else they will be more interesting than Dark Reapers)

2)There's an error on the detachment cost. 6 heavy guardians + 3 falcons cost 300 points. 3 falcons cost 150 points so we could imagine that 6 heavy guardians stands could cost from 150 to 200 points (considering some kind of discount when adding a falcon detachment). Even with the highest cost, you get a 6 stands detachment that costs 200 points. It would be honnest to increase the Heavy Black guardians detachment to 6 stands and keep the same profile.

8 shots at 5+ with a -1  (Infantry, can hide in buildings better, CAF 0)

vs.

6 shots at a 4+ with a -2 (Light Arty, can't shoot flyers if you use standard rules, CAF -3)

Though I'm not quite sure why the detachment size of the Heavy Guardians isn't 6 like normal Guardians.

Clearly if you are a min-maxer and firepower is your only consideration the 2 Brightlance detachments are better.  There are about 500 other possible comparisons where you can say "based on this criteria unit X is clearly superior to unit Y".  If you don't want NE to turn into Epic 40K, lets keep it that way.

*sigh!*

Where as we need another version of the Land Speeder (Storm) to go along with those other new versions I guess.

If it is in 40K which make no mistake IS the well spring from which ALL our ideas come from then people will want to play them in EPIC. There is nothing wrong with that. So make it happen.

Malleus, I too think the Eldar Heavy Detachment is a waste of points.

here's what I do.

x6 stands. 200 points. BP 3. Morale: 3. Only one per company card (any) allowed.

10cm move. - save. -1 Caf (may not initiate a close combat).
Heavy Weapons 75cm x2 5+ -1

And that's it. It brings it into line squad wise with other Guardian units and increases the squads firepower (it was originally a four stand squad, right?) and so worth having. The Caf change is in keeping with the Caf change with Marine Heavy Weapons and should be reflected in all other lists. IG/TG heavies and such. The (may not initiate a close combat) thing is mine and to me makes sense and is shared by all towed support weapons and makes a another distinction between normal infantry and superhuman infantry like Marines and Exarch/Reapers etc.

yes at 6x stands they are more interesting, atleast they fit the Ulthiwe abit more.... more guardians and less tanks/other stuff means that the guardians needs more heavy weapons.
Also at 6x stands that can go into houses they are on par with the Bright Lance battery, though I think that the heavyweapons team should still have CAF 0, most militaries equip their grunts more or less the same for CC, and these are Guardians with an antigrav heavy weapon (or 1-2 shoulder-mounted heavy weapon(s) per team)
but thats just me, the main thing is that @ 4 stands for 200 they are strangely bad for being a fluffchoice =)

I disagree, Warhead.

This change would give Eldar a straightforward heavy infantry hitter unit. Same stats than the marine devastators, but for half the price (200 compared to 350). Imho, Eldar have enough very good units and every army has some crap units, some armies even have more crappy units than good ones (Did I hear Marines?). Even mores so, most Eldar weapons have very nice to-hit values, but lack attack dice. This is one of the (minor) drawbacks of Eldar. And i think it should stay that way.

The Marine Devastators, although expensive is one of the nice Marine units out there. Please don't make a cheaper copy for eldar.

I dont realy see that as a problem, the heavy weapon team should be ulthiwe only I think, (and I think it should be 1 / Ulthiwe host too) so you wouldnt see that many of them =) not like those pesky Devastator companies that can ruin anyones day ^_^

I limited the number allowed as shown and modified the Caf considerably, I allowed the 10cm movement because they are Eldar and swift of foot... like little pixies they are. They also have to buy their own transports unlike Marines, even if they are Rhinos. It's not so as to compete with Marines but to make them a viable choice in the Eldar list than say Dark Reapers or Exarchs.

To trot out that old quote that I seem to get beaten up with in these moments when I find the time to express myself. All lists have their strengths and weaknesses (as you already stated) and to compare them to another races army list would be sheer folly and end up crashing the economy and/or turning us all into Twilight fans or something... mumble, mumble, cranky ol' man, mumble.

Nice

I also saw the archetypical gamer geek at Gencon last weekend wearing a classic T-shirt which read:

"And then Buffy staked Edward.

The End."
