What do you think?

Honestly, I feel that a chaos rebellion (with a little 'c') on the defensive in a war that is mostly Guard-vs-Guard has been done sufficiently, both in Vraks, and again in Siege. I feel that your current idea is more a twist on an existing theme, rather than something new and exciting.

I feel that Chaos on the attack would provide a more interesting supplement, especially as the Red Corsairs are known to be one of the most aggressive (attacking) CSM armies, with a Blood Pact-esque army by their side(traitor IG able to summon Daemons, with stalk tanks and some Daemon Engines) you would have two entirely new armies.

Imperial forces fighting against them could be a PDF army list (a list using Malcadors, Valdors, etc.), and later during the war a Space Marine chapter, Inquisition forces, etc, intervene to push back the Chaos invasion.

Chaos would be attacking this Heaven planet to gain its valuable resources.

Army lists would thus be:

- Red Corsairs *
- Blood Pact-esque Traitor Guard (with Stalk Tanks!) ***

- Heaven PDF (Malcador-using Guard) ***
- Ordos Hereticus Inquisition *
- Ordos Malleus Inquisition *
- A Space Marine Chapter *
- Possibly a variant IG list like Elysians *

* Already largely written, would simply need playtesting.
*** Would need writing and testing from scratch, and I'd be happy to help develop the lists.

I feel that something like that would be a lot more fun and interesting than another "chaos rebellion" story. Heck I feel it was a bit of a mistake for Siege to face the DKoK against a variant Siegemasters list, as it could have been a lot more creative.

So yeah, your current idea is largely along the lines of:

"Guard with new tanks vs. Traitor Guard with (the same?) new tanks, with Red Corsair allies"

Whereas I would like to see:

"Red Corsairs with Blood Pact-esque followers vs. a PDF force with new tanks, and the Inquisition intervening to crush the traitors and the daemons"

a)"Guard with new tanks vs. Traitor Guard with (the same?) new tanks, with Red Corsair allies"

b)"Red Corsairs with Blood Pact-esque followers vs. a PDF force with new tanks, and the Inquisition intervening to crush the traitors and the daemons"

I must confess that i now tend to lean more toward b) :)

The Inquisition part would be a bit tricky.

So can anyone change the title to Epic: Maelstrom please? :)

And is Heavenly synonymous with Celestial? In german both means "Himmlisch" (Heaven = Himmel). There is no differentation.

Or you could open a new thread in the Chaos sub-section?

I will start thread in the sub-section for the relevant armies. This here is for the supplement as a whole. Mainly to discuss it's backstory.
I will open a thread for the Heavenly Choir PDF in the IG section soon.

Rather than a PDF, how about an arbites army? Rules-wise it'd be similar, but it'd be more interesting than yet another guard army.

Arbites use Rhinos, and, ummm, would need some appropriate infantry proxies.

Perhaps from a company run by one of the forum members here.  :)

They're not completely synonymous. Celestial often refers to stars without referring to heaven.

I'm in favour of this list.  Not quite L&tD, which is kind of 'Cultist/Mutant Rabble with Renegade Guard Allies'.

A proper Renegade army, with all the special skills and training that entails, with serious Chaos leanings, a la the Blood Pact is what I've currently got a hankering for.  Given that Guard forces fled with the Corsairs in to the Maelstrom, they will likely be as curropted by Chaos as the Red Corsairs are.  This gives scope for a proper Renegade army that isn't just rabble, with additional Daemon Engine and daemonic units, if neccessary.

I've been thinking of ways in which the current 40k Codex would be adapted for doing this sort of army, without the daemonic elements anyway - thinking of how I might take allies for my 40k Chaos Marine army.

To start with, certain units would be off limits, or only available in limited numbers, representing that when an army turns rogue they lose the support of the Munitorum to replenish their vehicles and supplies.  But it doesn't stop them turning to darker forces to supply these...

So, I would drop Valkyries from the list, and make all tanks a 0-1 choice, as would Storm Troopers and Ogryns.

Then it's a case of 'count-as' units.  Commissars would be the Enforcers or Dictators that keep the forces doing the will of the dark gods.  Priests would be fanatical, rabid zealots (nothing new there!), only to the dark gods.  Conscript PLatoons would be Cultist mobs, the general citizenry that have grabbed/looted small arms and are fighting as part of the larger army.  And so on, and so forth.

Some units would need weapons options changing, e.g. make Cultists (conscripts) equipped with CCW, then additional points for Laspistols or Lasguns.  Ogryns would be limited in how many Ripper Guns the sqquad can take, representing them having broken down or run out of ammo long since.

So, I'm just throwing these ideas out there, whilst they're to do with the current 40k Guard Codex, I hope that something might prvide a seed of an idea that contributes to the Traitor Guard list.

Yeah. Although 'the heavens' can just mean the sky, it usually refers to Heaven in the religious sense, whereas 'celestial' can just as easily refer to the actual sky rather than any metaphysical concepts.

@firestorm40k: You might contact E&C because he wants to help with the PDF and Traitor Guard too. Perhabs you could work together?
With the Traitor Guard you have free rein with the exeptions that they won't use god specific daemons and machinery.

And goog that i can keep the name Heavenly and stillkeep it's double meaning :) (the first settlters thought the planet looked like heaven on earth...until the first died because of the spores)

Space Marines wise why why not pick something that fits the play style package. So Swordwind has the ultra fast, the ultra slow and the static (hows that for variation!).

Well, we got the army lists and theme in place.

So it's time for someone (BL?) to start writing the story.
