It certainly made the Tau firepower something to be feared and made them much more dynamic in terms of fire and maneuver.  Previous games i've had with Tau have pretty much made me feel like "Oh, so they're slow and have no real heavy firepower...great....".

This has been my experience in the past too, that only the Crisis formations ever really engaged in movement actions.

I'm also a fan of the cut down list.  No drones on broadsides or crisis suits made me much careful how i deployed them and they couldn't just stand there all game taking punishment and dishing it out.

Indeed, Drones attached to Crisis units was a huge crutch under the ERC lists, and this is at least half of the reason I removed them as an upgrade choice (the other half being that I didn't want identical units with different Initiative ratings costing the same ammount of points).

The main feature of the Tau 40K list was that Tau were very shooty and synergetic, yet were slower than eldar but with heavy armour.

Tau used their maneuverability to set up shooting opportunities and keep the enemy at range and were slower than Eldar but with more armour.

Eldar use their maneuverability to get in close and punish the enemy with close range firefights/CC and sacrifice armour for speed.

Tau are also now on a par with Guard in terms of shootiness but lack the nos and heavy armour and must combine units, rather than each one being an island which again, catches the flavour of their 40K counterparts and the fluff.

This is something that i feel has been achieved with the markerlight changes.  The need to pick on one unit at a time and ensure it is wiped out, so that there is no return fire is now a feature of the epic Tau list using your proposal and i feel it captures the spirit of the 40K army very well.

certainly read how I would expect Tau to play - manouvere, co-ordinate and shoot and for once it seemed that Tau was more of a force to be reckoned with (all the other batreps I've read with Tau seemed as if they won rarely and mostly by luck).

I'd be up for a play test over Vassal sometime if you're interested? Not sure what the time difference will be (I'm in PA, USA) but this weekend is a possibility or in a couple of weeks time (moving house next week).

Interesting battlereport. Surely it felt like Tau have to behave in Epic. But i would prefer battlereports against official armies instead against other experimental armies.

I don't actually consider AMTL particularly experimental anymore.

Reports of battles against other army lists would of course be awesome.

Well AMTL are some special cases because there are no AP targets.
I wonder how the same Tau army would have fared against Orks or Imperial Guard.

They should, given they had great AP firepower already compared to most armies point for point, do even better than before against mechanised guard or infantry orks. Just this time with maybe more interesting tactics :)

Agreed, Thanks for the report looked like a good battle (for the Tau at least)
